Actress Hayden Panettiere, known for 'Heroes' and 'Nashville,' Dies at 36

Hayden Panettiere, the actress best known for her roles in "Heroes" and "Nashville," has died at age 36. Her father, Skip Panettiere, confirmed her death in a statement to ABC News. No cause of death has been announced.
Her representative described her as "an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her." Vulture and Salon were among the first outlets to report the news. The entertainment world has been left in shock at the sudden loss of a woman who spent nearly her entire life in the public eye.
Panettiere began acting at just 11 months old. She became a household name as a child actress before landing her breakout role as Claire Bennet on NBC's "Heroes," which ran from 2006 to 2010. She appeared in all 73 episodes of the series, according to Vulture.
She went on to star as country singer Juliette Barnes on ABC and CMT's "Nashville" from 2012 to 2018. She also appeared in the "Scream" franchise and the 2000 film "Remember the Titans." WRAL noted she was one of the most prolific young actors of her generation.
Behind her on-screen success, Panettiere faced serious personal struggles. She gave birth to her daughter, Kaya, in December 2014. She later checked into a treatment facility for severe postpartum depression in October 2015. In 2018, she signed over primary custody of Kaya to her ex-fiancé, former boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko.
Her younger brother, actor Jansen Panettiere, died suddenly in February 2023 at age 28 from an enlarged heart. The loss hit her hard. She had also been in a volatile relationship with Brian Hickerson, who pleaded no contest to felony domestic violence charges against her in 2021 and served jail time. According to The Times, Panettiere's family called for privacy as they grieve the loss.
Skip Panettiere, her father, broke the news in a statement shared with media. "It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden," he said. He asked the public to respect the family's privacy as they cope with "this unimaginable loss," according to Morning Journal.
English.aaj.tv reported that her representative echoed the family's grief, calling her a force who touched millions of lives. Kaya, now 11, remains in Europe with her father, Klitschko. Skip and Lesley Panettiere have now lost both of their children within three years.
As of the time of reporting, no official cause of death has been announced. Press Democrat and multiple other outlets confirmed that her family has not shared details about how she died. The circumstances of her final days remain unclear.
Panettiere had reportedly complained of severe back pain over the past year. Her final film, the psychological thriller "Sleepwalker," premiered in January 2026. She had also recently been open about her personal struggles during a media tour. Sun Sentinel noted that her death came as a shock to fans and colleagues alike who had hoped she was on a path to healing.
