Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Brings Back Campaign Early Access October 16 for Digital Pre-orders

Activision described the campaign as “classic, linear, cinematic campaign missions,” adding that “what begins as a routine mission descends into chaos when North Korea launches a full-scale invasion, forcing Park and his unit into a desperate battle through collapsing cities and counteroffensives.”
The Oct. 16 campaign-only early access is followed by the rest of the package: “multiplayer modes and extraction shooter game type DMZ completing the package a week later for the full launch on Oct. 23.”
On Game Pass, IGN noted it is “not a day one Game Pass launch” and linked the change to “new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma decid[ing] to pull new Call of Duty games out of the subscription service, instead adding them some time after release.”
IGN also highlighted context for why early access matters commercially: MW4 is the first to receive campaign early access since MW3 (2023), and it pointed to MW3’s poor reception—“IGN awarded it 4/10.” It also reiterated Black Ops 6 (2024) and Black Ops 7 (2025) skipped the feature.
Previews around the reveal added performance and roadmap details: Windows Central reported Infinity Ward’s reveal trailer has “racked up an astounding 58 million views on YouTube in just two weeks,” and said a “proper reveal” of the game’s third mode, DMZ, was included in the Xbox Games Showcase.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will let players jump into its single-player campaign a full week early. Activision confirmed that anyone who digitally pre-orders the Standard Digital Edition or Vault Edition can start playing on October 16, with the full game — including multiplayer and the DMZ extraction mode — launching on October 23.
The feature marks the return of Campaign Early Access after two straight years without it. IGN noted that both Black Ops 6 (2024) and Black Ops 7 (2025) skipped the benefit entirely. The last time it appeared was Modern Warfare 3 in 2023 — a game IGN scored 4/10.
Players take the role of Private Park, a young South Korean soldier. Activision describes the setup as "a routine mission" that "descends into chaos when North Korea launches a full-scale invasion, forcing Park and his unit into a desperate battle through collapsing cities and counteroffensives." Captain Price also returns, running an off-book operation tied to a weapon that could shift the global balance of power.
The campaign spans multiple locations, including the Korean Peninsula, New York, Paris, and Mumbai. Activision calls it a "classic, linear, cinematic" experience — a direct contrast to Modern Warfare 3's widely criticized Open Combat Missions, which many fans saw as recycled content. The reveal trailer has already racked up 58 million YouTube views in just two weeks, according to Windows Central.
The October 16 head start applies across Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, PlayStation 5, Battle.net, Steam, and Nintendo Switch 2. Pure Xbox confirmed the benefit covers both digital editions. Players get the full campaign window — seven days — before multiplayer and DMZ unlock at the October 23 full launch.
MW4 is one of the first major shooters confirmed for Nintendo Switch 2. The game's DMZ mode — a third-person extraction shooter type — got its "proper reveal" at the Xbox Games Showcase on June 7, according to Windows Central. A multiplayer beta is also planned for pre-order customers, though exact dates have not been announced.
Unlike recent Call of Duty titles, MW4 will not be available on Xbox Game Pass on day one. IGN reported that new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma decided to "pull new Call of Duty games out of the subscription service," with titles added only after an unspecified period post-launch. That means most players must buy the game outright to access it.
The shift is a major reversal. Black Ops 6 launched directly on Game Pass in 2024, making it free for subscribers on day one. By requiring a purchase for MW4, Microsoft is betting the Call of Duty brand is strong enough to drive direct sales. Early signs suggest strong demand — that 58-million-view trailer points to significant pent-up interest, per Windows Central.
The return of early access is widely seen as a signal. Insider Gaming noted that Activision is framing the campaign as a premium, standalone experience. Reintroducing early access after two years suggests confidence in what Infinity Ward has built — and a deliberate effort to erase the memory of MW3's 4/10 reception.
The full package comes together on October 23. Multiplayer and DMZ will complete the release, with Worth Playing noting that the "multiplayer modes and extraction shooter game type DMZ" finish out the launch that week. Pre-orders are live now across all six platforms.
