Blizzard Announces Diablo V for 2029 Set in a Post-Apocalyptic Sanctuary Where Hell Won

Diablo V’s protagonist is described as a survivor of Westmarch with a personal connection to Diablo, and players may be able to shift into the Terror Realm, Diablo’s domain.
The devastated setting reportedly exists seven years after Diablo conquered Westmarch: humans have become Dread Commanders, angels are crucified, and the world has no safe havens. Developers also said a brief period of peace followed Diablo IV’s events before Diablo’s successful war on Sanctuary.
Diablo IV’s Season 15, “Season of Hell’s Legacy,” will feature a seasonal questline revisiting the franchise’s history, along with endgame improvements, additional customization, Horadric Cube crafting recipes and quality-of-life changes.
Season 15 will also bring Diablo IV to Nintendo Switch 2, expanding the game’s supported platforms.
Diablo game director Brent Gibson said Blizzard had concluded the “Story of Hatred” surrounding Mephisto and was moving toward the “Story of Terror,” while acknowledging that the precise path to Diablo V could change based on how players respond to each season.
Blizzard announced Diablo V for spring 2029, flipping the franchise formula on its head. Instead of heroes preventing apocalypse, players will survive in a world where Diablo has already won — a fallen Sanctuary roughly a century after Diablo IV's events. The game lets you control a survivor from devastated Westmarch, with potential access to Diablo's Terror Realm itself.
Meanwhile, Diablo IV continues its story through seasons, with no expansions planned. Season 15, "Hell's Legacy," launches soon and will add Diablo IV to Nintendo Switch 2, bringing endgame improvements, new crafting recipes, and a celebratory look back at the franchise's 30-year history.
Diablo V's setting is radically darker than previous games. Seven years before the story begins, Diablo conquered Westmarch and won his war on Sanctuary. Humans now serve as Dread Commanders. Angels hang crucified. No safe havens remain anywhere. Game director Brent Gibson said Blizzard had finished the "Story of Hatred" around Mephisto and was moving into the "Story of Terror."
Three classes have been revealed so far. Blizzard confirmed the Demon Hunter and Monk return from previous games, joined by a brand-new Plague Knight class. This character spreads disease as a walking weapon of devastation, designed to fit Diablo V's nightmarish setting. All three were announced at BlizzCon 2026 during the "Forging the Next Era" panel.
Diablo IV's fifteenth season, "Season of Hell's Legacy," will recap the franchise's history through seasonal quests. Players face the Echo of Diablo, Splinters of Evil, and Nightmares Made Real in familiar locations. IXBT Games reported the season adds Horadric Cube crafting recipes and quality-of-life improvements to smooth the game's endgame experience.
Season 15 marks a milestone: Diablo IV launches on Nintendo Switch 2, expanding who can play. Blizzard plans to keep supporting Diablo IV as long as players stay active, letting seasonal content gradually prepare the community for the jump to Diablo V in 2029.
Blizzard is flexible about Diablo V's exact path forward. Gibson acknowledged that player response to each season could change how the story unfolds between now and 2029. The developer revealed you may enter the Terror Realm, Diablo's own domain, and your character has a personal connection to the demon lord — though details remain sparse.
