Texas Paddleboarders Rescue Drowning Raccoon from Lady Bird Lake, Offering Umbrella Shelter

Two paddleboarders on Lady Bird Lake near Austin, Texas, pulled off an unlikely rescue — saving a drowning raccoon from the water during a rainy outing. The pair spotted the struggling animal and, thinking it was a dog, used their paddle to scoop it aboard, according to 13ABC.
Once safely on the board, the wet raccoon settled in under one paddleboarder's umbrella and rode calmly to shore. The moment the board hit land, the animal hopped off and disappeared without looking back, WDAM reported.
The two paddleboarders were out on Lady Bird Lake when they noticed something struggling in the water. They believed it was a dog in trouble. Only after getting closer did they realize the animal was a raccoon, according to WLBT.
Rather than turning away, the pair acted fast. They used their paddle to lift the animal out of the water and brought it onto the board. The raccoon did not fight them. It stayed calm through the whole ordeal, WLFI reported.
With rain still falling on the lake, one of the paddleboarders held an umbrella to shield himself from the weather. The rescued raccoon moved right underneath it, according to Fox Carolina. The animal appeared completely at ease beside the stranger who had just saved its life.
Photos and video from the rescue show the raccoon sitting quietly on the board, dry beneath the umbrella while the paddlers made their way back to shore. The animal showed no signs of fear or aggression during the ride, Hawaii News Now reported.
When the paddleboard reached the shore, the raccoon's mood changed quickly. The animal hopped off the board and ran away on its own. It never looked back at the people who had just saved it, according to AZ Family.
The quick exit was a good sign. A wild animal running off on its own means it was healthy enough to survive. The paddleboarders walked away with a story few people will ever be able to tell, Live 5 News reported.
