HSBC Deepens Google Cloud Partnership to Embed AI in 200 Global Projects

HSBC said one of the first applications enabled by the deal would be an “AI-driven insights tool for wealth management” designed to support HSBC relationship managers.
HSBC CEO Georges Elhedery told bankers at an investor day to embrace AI and warned against staff resistance, saying they must avoid “fighting us” and not become “disenfranchised, not anxious, overwhelmed, and resisting the change,” adding: “I need 200,000 colleagues with us on this journey.”
Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian said the HSBC partnership is “a blueprint for the future of the financial services industry,” adding that HSBC is building “a more intelligent, resilient, and responsive bank” by accelerating AI adoption using Gemini, the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, forward-deployed engineers, and DeepMind research.
HSBC indicated its Google Cloud footprint is already substantial, saying it currently has 600 applications running on Google Cloud infrastructure.
HSBC has signed a multiyear deal with Google Cloud to roll out more than 200 new AI projects over the next two years, the bank announced on June 17 at the Google Cloud Summit in London. Each top-priority project must deliver at least $100 million in revenue gains or cost savings, according to FinTech Global.
The partnership taps Google's Gemini AI models, its Gemini Enterprise Agent platform, and engineers from Google DeepMind. HSBC already runs 600 applications on Google Cloud infrastructure, making this expansion a step up from migration to full AI integration, FinTech Futures reported.
HSBC says the first major product will be an AI-driven insights tool for wealth management. It will combine Gemini-generated market analysis with real-time customer data. Relationship managers will use it to give clients faster, more tailored financial guidance. One existing AI assistant has already cut meeting prep time from hours to minutes for thousands of staff, according to FinTech Global.
Fighting financial crime is the other early priority. HSBC's AI already monitors close to one billion transactions per month, Sharecast reported. A 2023 pilot doubled the rate of suspicious activity flagged while cutting false positives by 60%. The new system aims to let the bank intervene twice as fast when it spots a threat.
Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian said the HSBC deal is "a blueprint for the future of the financial services industry." He added that HSBC is building "a more intelligent, resilient, and responsive bank" by using Gemini alongside DeepMind's forward-deployed engineers, who will work directly inside HSBC's systems to build custom AI agents, according to FinTech Global.
Analysts see the deal as a big win for Google Cloud in its fight with AWS and Azure for bank contracts. If HSBC hits its $100 million target per project, it could force rivals like JPMorgan and Citigroup into their own large-scale AI infrastructure deals, GuruFocus noted.
HSBC CEO Georges Elhedery has been blunt about what is at stake for workers. At a May 2026 investor day in Hong Kong, he said generative AI will "destroy certain jobs" but urged staff to stay the course. "I need 200,000 colleagues with us on this journey," he said, warning against staff who become "disenfranchised, anxious, overwhelmed, and resisting the change," according to GuruFocus.
Labor advocates are skeptical of the "retraining" framing. Reports suggest HSBC is weighing cuts of up to 20,000 roles — roughly 10% of its workforce — as middle-office tasks are automated, according to FinTech Futures. HSBC insists that "human judgment, decision-making, and accountability" will remain central to all AI-supported decisions.
The Google deal arrives after HSBC reached its annual $1.5 billion cost reduction target in the first half of 2026 — six months ahead of schedule. Early AI efficiencies drove much of that gain. HSBC also appointed David Rice as its first Chief AI Officer in March 2026 to ensure each of the 200 projects clears the $100 million value bar, Sharecast reported.
Despite the scale of the Google deal, HSBC is not going all-in on one vendor. The bank still uses OpenAI for its "Wealth Intelligence" platform and holds a partnership with Mistral AI, FinTech Futures noted. That multi-vendor approach suggests HSBC is deliberately avoiding dependence on any single AI provider as the technology continues to evolve fast.
