Arizona Diamondbacks Place Lourdes Gurriel Jr. on 10-Day IL with Adductor Strain

The Arizona Diamondbacks placed outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr on the 10-day injured list with a strained right adductor, according to Reuters. Gurriel felt discomfort during a swing in a game just before the All-Star break.
The move adds to a difficult season for Gurriel. He began 2025 on the IL while recovering from a torn right anterior cruciate ligament. In 47 games this year, he is batting .207 with two home runs and 21 RBIs, per Reuters.
This is Gurriel's second stint on the injured list in 2025. He spent time earlier in the season recovering from a torn ACL in his right knee. Now it is the right adductor — a muscle in the inner thigh — that has sidelined him again, according to WKZO.
The back-to-back right leg injuries raise questions about his availability for the rest of the year. Gurriel has appeared in just 47 of Arizona's games. The Diamondbacks have not given a timeline for his return.
To fill the roster spot, the Diamondbacks recalled catcher Adrian Del Castillo from Triple-A Reno, KELO reported. The team also added right-handed pitcher Gerardo Carrillo to the 40-man roster.
Del Castillo gives Arizona depth behind the plate as the second half begins. Carrillo's addition to the 40-man roster protects him from being selected by another team in the Rule 5 draft.
Losing Gurriel hurts Arizona's outfield depth right as the second half of the season gets underway. His .207 batting average is below expectations, but his 21 RBIs showed he was still contributing with runners on base, per WMBDRADIO.
The Diamondbacks reached the World Series in 2023 and are pushing to stay competitive in the NL West. Injuries to key pieces like Gurriel make that chase harder. Arizona will need contributions from players called up from the minors to cover the gap.
