Boston Red Sox Extend Win Streak to 11, Reach .500 with Doubleheader Sweep Over Rays

The Boston Red Sox are on fire. A 5-3 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday pushed their winning streak to 11 games — the longest since a run from Sept. 15-25, 2016 — and brought them back to .500 on the season, according to WHDH.
The victory also completed a doubleheader sweep of the Rays. Wilyer Abreu hit two home runs and All-Star catcher Willson Contreras went deep in his first game back from a suspension. Six Boston relievers combined for six scoreless innings to seal the deal, per The Caledonian Record.
The Red Sox trailed after Tampa Bay's Junior Caminero hit his 29th home run of the season. But Boston punched back fast. Abreu answered with his 13th homer to put the Red Sox back in front, according to Seattle PI. He also added a second home run later in the game, giving him a two-homer night.
Contreras, an All-Star catcher, added his own blast in his return from a five-game suspension. That suspension had originally been seven games but was cut short on appeal, WWL TV reported. Both players made an immediate impact the moment they stepped back on the field.
Boston's six relievers were the quiet heroes of the night. They combined to throw six straight scoreless innings, giving the Rays no path back into the game. That kind of bullpen performance has been a hallmark of this Red Sox run, according to Times Union.
Tampa Bay managed just three runs total and could not solve the stream of Boston arms coming out of the bullpen. The Rays, once a postseason threat, were swept in both games of the doubleheader as Boston kept rolling.
Reaching .500 is a big deal for this Red Sox team. It is the first time they have been at an even record since just the second game of the season, Post Register noted. That means Boston spent most of the year below .500 before this historic streak turned things around.
Eleven straight wins is the kind of run that changes a season. Boston has gone from a struggling club to a genuine contender in just over two weeks. The last time they won this many in a row was nearly nine years ago, according to Beaumont Enterprise.
The Red Sox are now squarely in the playoff conversation. Going from below .500 to riding an 11-game win streak gives the team — and its fans — real momentum heading into the rest of the summer. Every win from here builds on a foundation that looked shaky just weeks ago.
The combination of returning stars, a hot bullpen, and timely home runs has made Boston hard to stop. If the streak continues, it will be the longest winning run for the franchise in nearly a decade, per The Star.
