Los Angeles Dodgers Put Edwin Diaz on Injured List; Shohei Ohtani Advances Towards Mound Return

The Los Angeles Dodgers placed closer Edwin Diaz on the injured list Tuesday with inflammation in the right side of his neck, according to AP News. Diaz has struggled badly this season, posting an 11.85 ERA with seven saves in 11 opportunities across 16 games. He returned to Los Angeles to undergo imaging.
On a brighter note for the Dodgers, four-time MVP Shohei Ohtani threw another bullpen session before the game, Daily Gazette reported. Ohtani has been working back from knee inflammation and biceps discomfort. His next step is to throw live batting practice.
Diaz signed with Los Angeles as a marquee closer, but his 2025 season has been a rough one. He holds a 2-2 record with an 11.85 ERA — a number far above the league average for closers. He converted seven of his 11 save chances before the injury shut him down, according to Newsday.
The neck issue forced Diaz to leave the team and fly back to Los Angeles. The Dodgers said he will undergo imaging to learn more about the injury. No timetable for his return has been set, according to Houston Chronicle.
Shohei Ohtani's road back to the mound took another step forward Tuesday. He threw a bullpen session before the Dodgers' game, his latest workout since dealing with knee inflammation and biceps discomfort. The session went well enough to push him closer to the next milestone, The Facts reported.
That next step is live batting practice, where Ohtani will face real hitters for the first time in his recovery. Completing live BP would put him on track for a formal pitching return. The Dodgers have not announced a target date, according to Post Register.
Losing Diaz opens a real hole in the back of the Dodgers' bullpen. Even with his high ERA, he was the team's primary closer. Los Angeles will need to find someone else to protect late leads while he is out, according to Durango Herald.
Ohtani's potential return as a pitcher could eventually help. But the Dodgers cannot count on that timeline. In the short term, they will need internal options to step up and handle save situations, Winnipeg Free Press noted.
