Firefighters Continue Battling Major Wildfire in Cairngorms, Public Urged to Stay Away

A major wildfire is burning through Cairngorms National Park in Scotland, spreading across roughly six kilometres of heathland and threatening nearby homes, businesses, and campsites, according to The National. Firefighters are urging the public to stay well away from the affected area to prevent new fires from breaking out.
Emergency crews say they have enough resources on the ground and are working to bring the blaze under control, Standard reported. No timeline has been given for when the fire will be fully contained.
The wildfire started in heathland inside Cairngorms National Park, Scotland's largest national park. It has since grown to cover an area of around six kilometres. Dry conditions in moorland and heathland make fires like this especially hard to contain once they take hold.
Homes and businesses in the area are at risk, including campsites used by visitors to the park, East Lothian Courier reported. Authorities have not confirmed whether any properties have been damaged or destroyed.
Fire crews have confirmed they are well-resourced and actively working to bring the incident to a safe end, according to Standard. Crews are likely using a combination of ground teams and aerial support, which is standard in large moorland fires.
Moorland wildfires are among the toughest fires to fight. They can smoulder underground for days before flaring up again. That makes it difficult to declare a fire fully out, even after visible flames are gone.
Firefighters have made a direct plea to the public: stay out of the affected areas. Their concern is not just the active blaze, but the risk of people accidentally starting new fires nearby, North Wales Pioneer reported. Dry vegetation across the park makes the whole area vulnerable right now.
Cairngorms attracts thousands of walkers, campers, and tourists each year. During a wildfire, increased foot traffic raises the chance of sparks from campfires, barbecues, or discarded cigarettes. Officials have not specified what sparked the current fire.
Scotland has seen a rise in large wildfires in recent years, particularly in spring and early summer when vegetation is dry and winds are strong. Cairngorms, with its vast open moorland, is one of the most fire-prone areas in the country. Fires there can spread quickly and are difficult to access by road.
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service regularly responds to moorland fires across the Highlands. Large incidents like this one often require mutual aid from multiple fire stations across the region, according to South Wales Guardian.
