Díaz Returns but Astros Will Manage His Workload Carefully
Díaz suffered a left oblique strain during batting practice on May 4 and missed roughly six weeks. Manager Joe Espada made clear the team would not rush him back to a full-time load. "We have to keep a close eye on how quickly he recovers... the volume is important, games in a row is important," Espada said, according to Houston Chronicle.
Veteran catcher Christian Vázquez handled most of the catching duties in Díaz's absence. Espada said Vázquez would continue to see significant playing time, crediting him with helping "turn the pitching around" during that stretch, per Houston Chronicle.

To clear roster space, the Astros designated reliever Jayden Murray for assignment and optioned catcher Collin Price to Triple-A Sugar Land. Murray had posted a 7.43 ERA in his appearances, per Houston Chronicle. The moves leave the bullpen thinner heading into a stretch of 13 games in 13 days.
The Houston Press noted that while the two returns help, deeper problems remain. Young hitters like Cam Smith and Brice Matthews are still struggling against MLB pitching. The team also committed $57.95 million in offseason spending to shore up a rotation that lost Framber Valdez, according to MLB Trade Rumors.
A Six-Man Rotation Could Be Next for Houston
With Brown back and fellow starter Cristian Javier reportedly nearing a return, the Astros are considering expanding to a six-man rotation, according to Houston Press. The move would protect Brown's arm after his shoulder scare and give extra rest to Japanese newcomer Tatsuya Imai.
Houston is currently chasing the Seattle Mariners in the AL West. Analysts say Brown and Díaz "raise the club's ceiling right away," though the team still has a long climb ahead.
