Lorenzen never recovered. He lasted just 3.1 innings, giving up 10 hits and 8 runs. His season ERA ballooned to 8.01. He currently leads all of Major League Baseball in hits allowed (99) and earned runs given up (54) this year, per CBS Sports.
Meckler's Hot Streak and Madrigal's Steady Night
Wade Meckler has been one of the Angels' brightest spots since his recall from Double-A on May 22. In that stretch, he is batting .389, going 14-for-36. On Wednesday, he went 4-for-5 with a double and two runs scored, according to MLB.com.
Nick Madrigal matched him hit-for-hit. The third baseman also went 4-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. His RBI single in the sixth inning stretched the lead to 11-3. The duo gave the Angels a 1-2 punch at the top of the lineup that Colorado had no answer for.
Ureña's Rotation Role Paying Off for the Angels
Walbert Ureña earned the win to improve to 3-4 on the year. The 22-year-old right-hander moved from the bullpen to the starting rotation in mid-April. Since then, he has posted a 2.08 ERA over his last seven starts, according to Newsday. His season ERA now sits at 2.68.
Ureña allowed just three hits and three walks while striking out seven in six innings. His performance was a sharp contrast to Lorenzen's meltdown across the diamond. The Angels' bullpen held Colorado to just one more run the rest of the way.
Soler Exits Early, Angels Eye Dodgers Series Ahead
The night was not without concern. Designated hitter Jorge Soler left the game in the fifth inning with left hip irritation. The Angels may need to call up depth from Triple-A if Soler lands on the injured list, per Associated Press. Shortstop Zach Neto (neck) is also still out.
The Angels (24-39) travel to face the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday. LHP Reid Detmers (2-5, 4.63 ERA) is set to start against RHP Roki Sasaki (3-3, 4.59 ERA). The Rockies (24-38) head home to face the Milwaukee Brewers. Both teams sit near the bottom of their respective divisions heading into the weekend.
