Neoen's 179MW Narrogin Wind Farm in Western Australia is set to receive the largest wind turbines ever installed in Australia, according to AP News. Chinese green technology company Envision Energy has received a formal Notice to Proceed from Neoen to supply and install 23 EN182-7.8 MW smart wind turbines at the site near Narrogin, southeast of Perth.
The project will generate enough electricity to power nearly 100,000 Western Australian homes each year, PR Newswire reported. That output equals roughly 3% of the annual electricity demand across Western Australia's South West Interconnected System, the main grid serving the state's population.
Record-Breaking Turbines Redefine Australia's Wind Energy Scale
Each EN182-7.8 MW turbine produces 7.8 megawatts of power, making them the biggest wind turbines ever deployed on Australian soil. The "182" in the turbine name refers to its rotor diameter of 182 meters — wider than two Boeing 747s placed wingtip to wingtip. At that size, each turbine sweeps a massive area of wind to generate maximum electricity, according to Yahoo Finance.
All 23 turbines will be installed across the Narrogin site in Western Australia's wheatbelt region. Envision Energy is responsible for both supplying the turbines and managing their installation on the ground, PR Newswire reported.
30-Year Maintenance Deal Locks In Long-Term Performance
Beyond the turbine contract, Envision Energy also signed a 30-year Operations and Maintenance Agreement with Neoen, according to AP News. That deal gives Envision responsibility for keeping the turbines running at peak performance for the full life of the project. Long-term service agreements like this are increasingly common in large wind projects to protect asset value over decades.
The agreement means Envision will monitor, repair, and optimize all 23 turbines through the 2050s. Neoen gets a single partner accountable for reliability from day one through the end of the project's operational life, PR Newswire reported.
Neoen Expands Its Footprint Across Western Australia's Grid
Neoen is already one of the biggest renewable energy developers in Australia. The French-founded company, now majority-owned by BlackRock, has built major wind and solar projects across the country. The Narrogin Wind Farm adds 179MW of new capacity to Western Australia's grid, Yahoo Finance reported.
Western Australia is working to reduce its reliance on gas-fired power. The South West Interconnected System currently leans heavily on fossil fuels. Adding 179MW of wind — roughly 3% of total annual grid demand — is a meaningful step toward cleaner power for the state's 2.3 million grid-connected residents, according to PR Newswire.
Envision Bets on Australia as a Key Growth Market
Envision Energy calls itself a global leader in green technology. The Shanghai-based company makes wind turbines, energy storage systems, and software for managing clean energy assets. Winning the Narrogin contract marks a significant foothold for the company in the competitive Australian market, AP News reported.
The Narrogin project signals growing appetite among Australian developers for larger, more powerful turbines. Bigger turbines mean fewer machines are needed to hit the same capacity target, which can cut construction and land-use costs.
