Halifax Summer Travel Boom Boosts Turo Car Rentals, Creating Income for Local Owners

Halifax car owners are cashing in on a summer travel surge. Vehicle bookings on Turo — a peer-to-peer car rental marketplace — are up 43 percent in Halifax compared to the same time last year, according to Montreal Gazette. Demand is especially strong around the Halifax Busker Festival, where bookings have jumped 48 percent year over year.
The spike mirrors a record-breaking year for tourism across Nova Scotia. The province pulled in $3.7 billion in tourism revenue in 2025, a gain that outpaced the national average, Edmonton Sun reported. Local residents with an extra car sitting in the driveway now have a clear window to earn income from it.
The Halifax Busker Festival is one of the city's biggest summer draws. It pulls thousands of visitors into the downtown core each year. Turo data shows that bookings around those festival dates are climbing faster than the rest of the summer — up 48 percent year over year, according to Calgary Sun. That makes it the single hottest window for car owners looking to earn rental income.
The July-to-August period overall is the peak window. Bookings for trips between July and August 2026 are already well ahead of last year's pace, Fairview Post reported. Hosts who list their cars early stand to benefit most from the surge in visitor demand.
Nova Scotia had a breakout year for tourism in 2025. The province brought in $3.7 billion in visitor spending — a figure that beat the national growth rate, according to Whitecourt Star. More tourists arriving by plane means more people who need wheels once they land. Traditional car rental agencies often run short on inventory during peak periods, which is where platforms like Turo fill the gap.
That shortfall creates a direct opportunity for private car owners. When rental agencies can't meet demand, visitors turn to peer-to-peer options. With Halifax seeing a 43 percent jump in Turo bookings, the city is clearly feeling that pressure, Stratford Beacon Herald noted.
Signing up is straightforward. Local car owners can register an eligible vehicle directly on the Turo platform. Turo handles the booking process, payments, and provides insurance coverage during trips. Hosts set their own price and availability, meaning they can block off dates when they need the car, Cold Lake Sun reported.
Earnings vary based on the car type, price, and how often it is listed. But with demand up sharply and festival weekends acting as natural booking peaks, even occasional hosting during the summer could add up. Turo says the momentum is likely to grow further as the travel season hits its stride, according to Daily Herald Tribune.
