According to Anaqua's 2026 Semiconductor Industry Patent Report, patents filed at the intersection of AI and semiconductors surged 114% over the last five years — nearly 40% faster than overall semiconductor patenting, which grew 78%.
The findings come from analysis of over 700,000 semiconductor patent filings using Anaqua's AcclaimIP platform. The data reveals that AI is no longer just influencing chip development — it's defining innovation at every level of the technology stack, from processor architecture to custom accelerators built for hyperscalers.
Global leaders have emerged in distinct areas of AI semiconductor innovation. Anaqua's analysis shows China dominates AI inference patenting and overall AI-hardware leadership. Samsung leads in high-bandwidth memory (HBM) patenting with 1,194 filings and holds a strong position in AI architecture patents.
IBM rounds out the top tier, leading in AI-integration patents and analog AI innovation. This fragmented leadership reflects how AI chips demand specialized expertise across memory, processing, and architecture — no single company controls the full stack.
The shift goes beyond raw numbers. Anaqua found that AI is a structural driver of semiconductor innovation, not just a trend. Patents are concentrated in specialized areas: chip architectures optimized for machine learning, graphics processing units (GPUs), inference processors, and custom accelerators.
