Mender Introduces Steward Platform to Optimize Enterprise IT Asset Lifecycle Management

Mender, an enterprise IT asset disposal and recovery company, launched Steward™ on June 3, 2026 — a platform it calls a "Command Center" for managing hardware across its entire lifecycle. The launch targets a chronic industry problem: companies often have no real-time visibility into what happens to their IT equipment during decommissioning, refresh cycles, or redeployment. Yahoo Finance reported the announcement early Tuesday morning.
The timing is deliberate. The enterprise IT asset management market is projected to hit $19.68 billion by 2030, growing at 17.2% annually, according to Markets Financial Content. AI-driven hardware refresh cycles have compressed from 3–5 years down to as little as 18–24 months, overwhelming the spreadsheets and static reports most IT teams still rely on.
Most legacy IT asset disposition (ITAD) tools deliver data after the fact — a PDF report once a project is done. Steward™ is designed to work in real time. IT teams can track assets, trigger workflows, and make decisions while a decommission or redeployment is actively happening. Co-Founder Robert Erwin was direct about the gap Steward fills: "This is not a rebrand of an old portal. Steward™ was built from the ground up to address the visibility, control, and operational challenges enterprise organizations continue to face with legacy systems," he said, per Yahoo Finance UK.
The platform is built for large-scale operations: hyperscale data centers, distributed infrastructure environments, and Fortune 500 refresh programs. One Mender case study showed $2.1 million in recovered value from a single data center refresh using optimized remarketing. Stewardâ„¢ aims to make that kind of outcome repeatable and measurable at scale, according to ADVFN.
ITAD has quietly become a cybersecurity issue. When hardware leaves a company without proper tracking, data-bearing drives can go missing. In one Mender audit cited by Yahoo Finance, a previous vendor had failed to remove 400 data-bearing drives from a client's decommissioned equipment. Those drives represented serious liability. Stewardâ„¢ addresses this by offering what the company calls "cryptographic proof of destruction" directly inside its dashboard.
Security experts now treat ITAD as a frontline defense, not a back-office task. Regulations like the EU's CSRD and NIS2 directives — both active in 2025–2026 — now require real-time lifecycle data as a legal compliance obligation. For IT managers, that means the old approach of waiting on end-of-project reports is no longer just inefficient. It may be non-compliant.
Mender processed over 1,500,000 assets globally between 2021 and 2023, growing at 34% per year on average, according to Yahoo Finance UK. That growth earned the company the #127 spot on Inc. 5000 Regionals: Southwest in May 2025. The company now supports ITAD operations across 22 countries. Co-Founder and CEO Kent Taggart has framed the company's mission around the circular economy — the idea that used hardware still holds real value.
Taggart put it plainly: "Our mission of making an impact — for our customers, our employees, our community, and our planet — has been key to our growth." Mender also donates 5% of net profits to environmental conservation, including Texas Parks and Wildlife. Steward™ embeds ESG metrics directly into the platform so sustainability officers can pull auditable carbon disclosure data without extra work, per ADVFN.
Broad IT asset management platforms like ServiceNow ITAM and Flexera One track what a company owns. Stewardâ„¢ focuses on what is happening to hardware during the high-risk window of decommission and disposal. That is a narrower but high-stakes slice of the market. Network downtime costs mid-size firms roughly $5,000 per minute, making any operational blind spot during a hardware transition expensive, according to Markets Financial Content.
It is also worth noting that Steward™ is unrelated to the open-source Mender.io project, which handles software updates for Linux devices. The two share a name but operate in entirely different spaces. Steward™ is focused strictly on physical hardware — its movement, recovery, data destruction, and downstream value extraction, as Yahoo Finance reported.
