Vermont Advances Innovative Mobile Battery Storage Project With Department of Energy Support

The U.S. power grid faces a growing crisis: it's not running out of electricity. It's struggling to move power where it's needed, when it's needed. The Vermont Long Duration Energy Storage Demonstration Project, backed by a $9.5 million DOE grant, will deploy up to eight mobile battery units across five sites in Green Mountain Power's service territory. Unlike traditional stationary batteries locked in one location forever, these units are designed to be redeployed as grid needs shift, handling peak demand, emergency response, and renewable energy integration across multiple locations over their lifetime.
Conventional battery storage works well for one job at one location. But the grid's real headache is flexibility. The $19 million project splits costs roughly evenly: the DOE covers $9.5 million, with partners funding roughly 50% through non-federal investment.
