Skanska Secures $94 Million Contract for New Data Center Construction in Virginia, USA

Swedish construction giant Skanska has signed a USD 94 million contract — about SEK 870 million — to build a data center in Virginia, USA, according to PR Newswire. The deal is with an existing client, though Skanska has not named them.
The project is one of Skanska's largest recent U.S. construction wins. It adds to the surge in data center building across Virginia, which is already the world's largest data center market.
The new facility will span 19,500 square meters — about 210,000 square feet. It will house four data halls, which are the rooms that hold the servers and computing equipment. The project also includes underground site utilities, PR Newswire reported.
Data halls are the core of any data center. They hold the racks of servers that power cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and internet services. Building four of them in a single facility signals a large-scale operation designed for heavy workloads.
Work will begin in October 2026 and wrap up in May 2028, giving the project an 18-month build window. That timeline fits the fast pace that data center clients often demand, as digital infrastructure needs keep growing, according to Sharecast.
Skanska's U.S. building division will lead the work. The company has built data centers across the United States before, and this contract extends that relationship with a repeat client.
Virginia — especially the area around Loudoun County known as "Data Center Alley" — hosts more data centers than anywhere else in the world. The state draws investment because of its reliable power grid, fiber connections, and business-friendly tax rules.
Demand for data center space has exploded in recent years. The rise of AI tools, cloud storage, and streaming services means companies need more computing power fast. Virginia sits at the center of that build-out.
At USD 94 million, this is a significant order for Skanska's U.S. unit. The Swedish crown value — SEK 870 million — reflects the contract's size in home-currency terms, which matters for Skanska's Stockholm-listed shares, Yahoo Finance noted.
Skanska books this contract in its U.S. construction segment. The company has been active in winning large American infrastructure and building projects. This deal keeps that momentum going into 2026 and 2027.
