Antonelli Dominates Free Practice 3 at Belgian GP as Top Rivals Vie Closely; Spanish Drivers Struggle

Kimi Antonelli keeps raising the bar. The championship leader topped Free Practice 3 at the Belgian Grand Prix in Spa, firmly positioning himself as the favorite for pole position later today, according to Levante-EMV.
What makes qualifying even more compelling: Norris, Verstappen, Russell, and Hamilton are all packed within two tenths of a second behind Antonelli. Four different cars. Four different teams. All capable of taking pole.
Antonelli set the fastest time in FP3, extending his strong form throughout the Belgian GP weekend. The young Mercedes driver currently leads the Drivers' World Championship — a remarkable position for a rookie in his debut season, La Opinión de Málaga reported.
Lando Norris slotted into second, with Max Verstappen third. George Russell and Lewis Hamilton rounded out the top five. All five drivers are separated by just two tenths. That is an incredibly tight gap at a circuit like Spa, which runs over 7 kilometers per lap.
The top five features four different constructors: Mercedes, McLaren, Red Bull, and again Mercedes with Russell and Hamilton. This kind of spread across teams is rare in modern Formula 1. It sets up a qualifying session with genuine unpredictability.
Spa-Francorchamps rewards high-speed aerodynamic efficiency. Sector 1, through Eau Rouge and Raidillon, is crucial. Any of the top five could find the extra tenth needed when it counts most — in a single qualifying lap.
It was a difficult morning for the Spanish contingent. Carlos Sainz could only manage 18th place in FP3. Fernando Alonso was even further back in 21st, according to La Provincia. Both drivers look far off the pace needed to reach Q3.
Sainz is driving for Williams this season, a team still working to close the gap to the frontrunners. Alonso, at 43 years old and racing for Aston Martin, has struggled to extract pace from his car in recent rounds. Spa has not offered them relief so far.
Qualifying at Spa takes place this afternoon. The key question is whether Antonelli can hold his advantage when every driver pushes to the absolute limit. His two tenths of a margin in practice may shrink to almost nothing in Q3.
For Norris and Verstappen, pole here would be a major statement in the championship fight. Antonelli leads the standings, so pressure is on his rivals to strike. Expect a dramatic session at one of Formula 1's most iconic circuits, El Periódico de Extremadura noted.
