Ballard Power Systems Receives Second Large Order for 15 MW Zero-Emission Fuel Cell Systems.

Ballard Power Systems (NASDAQ: BLDP) has landed a second 15-megawatt fuel cell order from the same off-grid power customer that placed an identical deal in 2024, according to PR Newswire. The order covers 150 FCmove®-HD+ modules — each producing 100 kilowatts — and will power hydrogen generators used on construction sites, live events, and movie sets.
CEO Marty Neese called the repeat business a clear vote of confidence, saying the order reflects "continued market adoption" and "a positive endorsement from our partner on the ability of the FCmove®-HD+ module to provide quiet, clean, economical and reliable low-carbon power," PR Newswire reported. Deliveries are set to begin in the second half of 2026.
The unnamed customer — widely linked to UK-based hydrogen generator provider GeoPura — first placed a 15 MW order in March 2024. That deal also covered 150 FCmove®-HD+ modules and included an option to buy 296 additional units by March 2026. The fact that the same customer returned for a second full order suggests the technology performed as promised in the field, according to Yahoo Finance.
GeoPura supplies Hydrogen Power Units to clients including the BBC and the UK Ministry of Defence. The company has a manufacturing partnership with Siemens Energy. Using fuel cell gensets instead of diesel engines cuts both exhaust fumes and noise — a major plus on urban film sets and crowded event sites.
Strict emissions rules are pushing the construction and events industries away from diesel. The UK's Stage V Emissions Standards cap harmful NOx and particle output from non-road machinery. An updated UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard, revised in March 2026, adds further pressure by requiring sites to cut operational carbon. Traditional diesel generators fail both tests.
Hydrogen fuel cells produce only water as a byproduct. They also run silently — a key selling point for live TV shoots and outdoor concerts. The "green filming" movement, led by broadcasters like the BBC, has made hydrogen generators a standard option for remote location shoots where grid power is not available.
The June 2026 order arrives during one of Ballard's strongest stretches in years. The company posted Q1 2026 revenue of $19.4 million — up 26% year over year — with a positive gross margin of 14%. Its cash balance stood at $516.8 million. BLDP shares hit a monthly high of $6.38 in June 2026, up from a 52-week low of $1.39, a gain of roughly 157%, according to ADVFN.
Analysts have taken notice. Lake Street Capital upgraded BLDP to "Buy" in May 2026 with a $5 price target, citing "excellent progress" in turning pipeline deals into firm orders. Susquehanna raised its target to $4.25, pointing to improving margins and contract momentum. Still, some analysts warn that reaching cash-flow breakeven — targeted for late 2027 — will require scaling well beyond the current 15 MW deal size, Yahoo Finance noted.
Ballard's total order backlog slipped roughly 5% to $112.9 million in Q1 2026. Critics argue that 15 MW wins, while encouraging, are not large enough on their own to transform the company's finances. Analysts at TD Cowen have flagged the data center and microgrid space — where single orders can reach 100 MW or more — as the next frontier for Ballard's stationary business.
The bull case is straightforward: a customer tried the product, liked it, and came back for more. The bear case is equally clear: Ballard needs dozens of these repeat orders — or a handful of much bigger ones — to hit profitability. The 2026 order is a strong proof point. It is not yet a tipping point, according to Newswire.
