WestJet Achieves Top On-Time Performance in North America During May

WestJet ranked first in North America for on-time performance in May 2026, with 85.88% of flights arriving on schedule, according to Cirium. The airline also placed seventh globally — the only Canadian carrier in the top 10.
The result marks a stunning turnaround. Just two years ago, WestJet sat near the bottom of North American carriers with roughly 71% on-time performance. That 15-point climb is one of the sharpest recoveries in recent aviation history, Montreal Gazette reported.
In 2023 and 2024, WestJet ranked 10th in North America with annual on-time rates around 71%. The airline hit the top spot for the first time in October 2025, posting 84.66% on-time performance. May 2026's 85.88% result shows the gains are holding, according to Cirium.
WestJet averaged 560 flights per day in May and recorded seven days with zero cancellations. Its home base, YYC Calgary International Airport, ranked ninth among mid-sized airports worldwide with an 87.12% departure on-time rate. "WestJetters have worked hard to strengthen our operation," said Diederik Pen, WestJet's President and Group COO, "translating into smoother guest journeys," according to WestJet Newsroom.
WestJet's turnaround was driven by an internal program called "LIFT." It introduced new crew management software, tighter aircraft turnaround times, and a strict 60-minute domestic check-in cutoff to reduce gate congestion. The airline also simplified its fleet to mostly Boeing 737 and 787 jets, Cirium noted.
"This level of performance doesn't happen by chance," said Safa Yamach, WestJet's VP of Operations Planning and Performance. "It's the result of a shared commitment to operational reliability," according to CAN Tech Letter. Mike Malik, Chief Industry Officer at Cirium, added: "When I saw WestJet's numbers, I had one thought: Good grief, this is fantastic."
Not everyone is celebrating. CUPE 8125, which represents 4,400 WestJet flight attendants, filed a formal labor dispute in April 2026. The union says flight attendants work 35 hours per month without pay because they are only paid when the plane is moving. "Flight attendants are performing increasingly demanding work, yet significant portions of that time are not fully compensated," said union president Alia Hussain, according to Northern News.
Federal conciliators were assigned in May. The conciliation window closes July 11, 2026. A strike after that date would put WestJet's hard-won gains at immediate risk. Separately, WestJet ended scheduled service to Medicine Hat and Lethbridge on June 24, cutting regional routes to sharpen hub-and-spoke efficiency, Recorder reported.
Owner Onex Corporation posted a $129 million USD profit in Q1 2026. Analysts widely expect a WestJet IPO within the next 24 months. Strong on-time numbers give the airline a key selling point for investors, according to Woodstock Sentinel Review.
WestJet is also using its reliability to drive tourism. A new "Calgary Stopover Program" launched in June 2026 aims to turn connecting passengers into overnight visitors. Tourism Calgary wants to double visitor spending to $6 billion by 2035. Punctual flights are central to making that pitch work.
