GT Biopharma Harnesses AI to Accelerate Next-Generation Tumor-Targeting Drug Discovery

GT Biopharma (NASDAQ: GTBP), a small clinical-stage cancer company, has woven artificial intelligence into its drug discovery process — and it expects the move to push multiple new drug candidates into pre-clinical development by 2027, according to Vancouver Sun. The company, which trades under $1 per share, is betting that AI can do in weeks what trial-and-error lab work once took years to accomplish.
The announcement comes as two of the company's drugs are already in Phase 1 human trials. CEO Michael Breen said the company has seen "a marked acceleration in our discovery productivity" since rolling out the new AI tools, adding that the next wave of drug candidates could have "shorter development timelines" and a higher chance of clinical success.
Traditional drug design in the "engager" space meant physically building and testing hundreds of protein variations by hand. That process is slow and expensive — a serious problem for a micro-cap company like GT Biopharma. Now, according to Calgary Herald, the company uses AI-guided sequence and structural analysis to model how a drug molecule will fold, bind, and behave before anyone sets foot in the lab.
The AI tools look at three key things early on: binding strength, stability, and what scientists call "developability" — basically, whether a drug can survive the journey from lab dish to human body. By screening molecules digitally first, GT Biopharma says it can focus lab resources only on the candidates most likely to succeed, according to Cold Lake Sun.
GT Biopharma's AI push is built on top of its TriKE® platform — a technology licensed from the University of Minnesota. TriKE® drugs grab onto Natural Killer (NK) immune cells on one end and cancer cells on the other, directing the body's own immune system to attack tumors. The platform also carries an IL-15 signal, a protein that tells NK cells to multiply and keep fighting.
The first drug, GTB-3650, is currently in Cohort 4 of a Phase 1 trial targeting CD33-positive blood cancers like leukemia. A second drug, GTB-5550, received FDA clearance in February 2026 and dosed its first solid tumor patient on May 14, 2026 — a milestone that marked the company's first move into cancers like prostate, breast, and lung, according to Woodstock Sentinel Review.
The AI ambitions come with a financial reality check. GT Biopharma reported just $9 million in cash as of March 31, 2026 — enough to fund operations only through Q4 2026. The company has reported no revenue, and its stock traded between $0.43 and $0.53 in late June 2026, well below its 52-week high of $3.85. It will need to raise more money before its 2027 pre-IND targets come due.
Analyst Jonathan Aschoff at Roth MKM has maintained an $11.00 price target on GTBP, pointing to a "valuation gap" between the company's clinical progress and its tiny market cap. But skeptics note that digital drug design still has to survive real-world human trials — a stage where most experimental drugs fail regardless of how well they look on a computer screen.
GT Biopharma is not limiting its AI-assisted pipeline to oncology. According to Ontario Farmer, the company says potential new candidates could target indications "beyond oncology" — which could include autoimmune diseases or viral conditions. The company has not named specific new targets yet, but expects to identify them through the same AI-guided screening process now being used for its cancer work.
The broader industry is watching closely. At the BIO 2026 conference, experts warned that "turning algorithms into actionable insights requires deep scientific alignment" and that computational gains must still survive the clinical "valley of death." For GT Biopharma, the next 18 months — and its ability to secure new funding — will determine whether its AI bet pays off.
