Bell and Université de Sherbrooke Partner to Advance Quantum, Cybersecurity, and AI Infrastructure in Canada

Bell Canada and the Université de Sherbrooke have signed a formal partnership agreement to build next-generation quantum and cybersecurity capabilities in Canada. The memorandum of understanding connects Bell's national network infrastructure with UdeS's expertise in quantum research, according to Leader Post.
The deal covers three main areas: quantum technologies, post-quantum cybersecurity, and sustainable data centre infrastructure. Bell is also partnering separately with Queen's University to link high-performance computing systems with quantum capabilities, Shoreline Beacon reported.
The MOU sets out plans to build advanced computing environments that combine three things: high-performance computing (HPC), quantum systems, and secure data infrastructure. HPC refers to powerful computers that process huge amounts of data very quickly. Quantum systems take that even further, using the rules of physics to solve problems regular computers cannot, Cochrane Times Post reported.
The partnership is designed to close the gap between lab research and real-world use. Bell brings its national network and the ability to deploy technology at scale. UdeS brings deep academic research in quantum science and cybersecurity. Together, the goal is to move Canada from research into large-scale deployment faster.
Post-quantum cybersecurity is a key focus of the deal. Today's encryption methods protect sensitive data across banking, government, and health systems. But future quantum computers could break those protections. Post-quantum security means building new defences that even quantum computers cannot crack, according to Fairview Post.
Canada is not alone in racing toward this. Governments and companies worldwide are treating post-quantum security as urgent. By pairing Bell's network reach with UdeS's research depth, the partnership aims to put Canada ahead of that threat before it becomes real.
Alongside the UdeS deal, Bell announced a separate collaboration with Queen's University. That partnership will explore how to link Canada's national high-performance computing environment directly with frontier quantum systems. The goal is a seamless connection between today's fastest computers and tomorrow's quantum machines, Leader Post reported.
This kind of link is seen as a critical bridge. HPC systems handle the large workloads of today. Quantum systems will handle problems that are currently impossible to solve. Connecting them means researchers and industries could tap into both without having to choose one or the other.
Both agreements reflect a broader push in Canada to turn academic quantum research into national infrastructure. Université de Sherbrooke is already a recognized leader in quantum science in Canada. Bell, listed on the TSX as BCE, brings the scale and network needed to move research out of labs and into real deployments, according to Shoreline Beacon.
Sustainable data centre infrastructure is also part of the plan. As AI and quantum computing demand more power, energy-efficient data centres are becoming a priority. The collaboration will look at how to build computing environments that are both powerful and environmentally responsible, Cochrane Times Post noted.
