Google Plans to Release Millions of Treated Mosquitoes in Florida to Combat Illness
Google is asking U.S. regulators to let it release up to 32 million specially treated male mosquitoes per year across Florida and California, with a total of 64 million planned over two years, according to WBAL-TV. The project, called "Debug," aims to shrink mosquito populations and cut the spread of diseases like dengue fever, Zika, and West Nile virus.
The Environmental Protection Agency is currently reviewing the permit application. A public comment period closed June 5, 2026, according to WCVB. If approved, releases could begin as early as late summer 2026 in counties that Google has not yet named.
The method works by infecting male mosquitoes with a common bacterium called Wolbachia. When those males mate with wild females, the eggs do not hatch. Fewer eggs means fewer mosquitoes in the next generation. About 60% of all insect species naturally carry Wolbachia, but the target mosquito — Aedes aegypti — does not, according to KETV.
Google is targeting two species. Aedes aegypti spreads dengue and Zika. Culex quinquefasciatus spreads West Nile virus. Only male mosquitoes are released because males do not bite. Scientists say the bacterium poses no risk to humans, animals, or pollinators like bees, according to WISN.
This is not Google's first attempt. The Debug project launched in 2016 under Alphabet, Google's parent company. A 2017 field trial in Fresno, California released 1 million treated mosquitoes per week. By the second year, the local biting female population fell by up to 95%, according to KCCI.
A similar program in Singapore and Indonesia cut dengue cases by 77% in trial zones. Scott O'Neill, CEO of the World Mosquito Program, said, "Debug's automated release technologies have the potential to significantly increase the speed and efficiency of our Wolbachia releases." Google also uses AI-powered robots and bug-sorting sensors to raise and prepare the mosquitoes at scale, according to KMBC.
Not everyone is on board. Public comments filed with the EPA were described as "mostly negative." One commenter, Heather Atkinson, argued the plan lacks "comprehensive, independent, and peer-reviewed studies" on long-term effects. Environmental groups like Friends of the Earth say residents have not given their consent, according to KOCO.
Critics worry about what happens if Wolbachia spreads beyond the target species or if mosquito populations rebound in unexpected ways. The EPA is treating the mosquitoes as a "biopesticide" under federal law, meaning the review focuses on biological safety rather than broader ethical questions, according to WGAL.
Warmer temperatures are pushing tropical mosquitoes into parts of the U.S. that never had them before. Dengue cases in Florida and Texas have risen in recent years. Traditional pesticide sprays kill indiscriminately, harming bees and butterflies along with mosquitoes, according to WVTM13.
Proponents say the Wolbachia method is surgical — it targets one species and leaves other insects alone. Economic studies from similar programs in Vietnam and Indonesia show these interventions can save hundreds of millions of dollars in healthcare costs. The EPA has not yet set a date for its final decision, according to WMTW.
