CM Punk Debuts on SmackDown as SummerSlam WWE Title Stakes Escalate

WWE SmackDown on July 17, 2026 delivered a loaded night in Albany, New York. CM Punk made his SmackDown debut and set up a massive collision with Cody Rhodes for the WWE Championship at SummerSlam, according to SI. Gunther also stirred the pot, claiming he has been wronged and deserves the title.
The biggest twist of the night: a new stipulation was added to the upcoming Saturday Night's Main Event tag match. POST Wrestling reported that if Gunther and Sami Zayn beat Cody Rhodes and CM Punk, the SummerSlam title match becomes a fatal four-way. The stakes just got much higher.
CM Punk showed up on SmackDown for the first time, setting the stage for a WWE Championship match at SummerSlam against Cody Rhodes. SI noted that Punk's debut was framed around his recent win over Sami Zayn for the Undisputed WWE Championship. The crowd in Albany got a preview of what SummerSlam could look like.
TPWW reported the show opened with a recap of Punk defeating Zayn for the title. That win is the backbone of the entire SummerSlam title picture. With Punk now on SmackDown, the rivalry with Rhodes feels more real and immediate.
Gunther took the mic and made clear he is angry. He said he has been mistreated and that the WWE Championship should be his. He challenged Cody Rhodes to a match right then and there, according to SI. Adam Pearce, who is filling in for an injured Nick Aldis, stepped in to block the match from happening.
POST Wrestling noted that Pearce intervened and refused to let the match take place. Gunther argued that Aldis saving his job was not a favor — it was something owed to him. The tension between Gunther and WWE management added a strong storyline layer to the night.
The tag match at Saturday Night's Main Event now has real consequences attached. TPWW confirmed that if Gunther and Sami Zayn defeat Rhodes and Punk in the tag match on July 18, the WWE Championship match at SummerSlam becomes a fatal four-way. All four men would then compete for the title.
That stipulation changes everything about Saturday Night's Main Event. What looked like a simple tag match is now a title-altering bout. POST Wrestling said the stipulation was officially added during the July 17 SmackDown broadcast, making next night's show even more important.
SmackDown also kicked off qualifying matches for an interim WWE Women's Championship ladder match at SummerSlam. TPWW confirmed that Tiffany Stratton and Jade Cargill both qualified during the July 17 episode. Rhea Ripley is already set to compete in the five-way ladder match.
More qualifiers are on the way. Fightful reported that Nia Jax vs. Charlotte Flair has been added to the July 24 SmackDown as the next qualifying match. Charlotte interfered in an earlier match, setting up that bout. The women's title picture is growing fast heading into SummerSlam.
