Top AI industry leaders advocate for coordinated development slowdown amidst intense competitive pressure.

Anthropic CEO, Dario Amodei, has advocated for a co-ordinated slowdown in AI development to better understand the risks of the technology's capabilities. He received public support from his counterpart at OpenAI, Sam Altman, Elon Musk, and Google DeepMind chief Demis Hassabis. However, competition within the AI industry is so intense that none of the industry's leading players are willing to risk easing off the accelerator alone. Amodee has expressed a willingness to co-ordinate with rivals, excluding China, and has suggested that he may also participate in discussions with them. The only concrete measure adopted by both Anthropic and OpenAI is the inclusion of independent observers to internal verify the companies’ work regarding AI safety. However questions remain about whether these measures can be implemented without support from the Trump administration.
