Nano One Advances Global LFP Cathode Strategy Amid Rising Energy Storage Demand

Nano One Materials is expanding its strategy to meet skyrocketing global demand for lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cathode materials used in batteries. Market Screener reports the company plans to license its One-Potâ„¢ process technology to regional development companies worldwide. LFP chemistries now account for roughly 60% of all lithium-ion battery cell demand globally, with non-Chinese markets alone expected to need 2.1 TWh annually by 2035.
The push reflects surging demand from energy storage systems, electric vehicles, and defence applications. Nano One is also exploring newer sodium-ion battery chemistries as a hedge. By licensing its technology into localized markets, the company aims to build partnerships without bearing the full cost of building manufacturing plants itself.
LFP batteries have become the dominant choice for lithium-ion cells. Trading View notes that LFP now represents about 60% of global lithium-ion battery cell demand in 2025. The chemistry is cheaper and safer than other options like NCA or NCM. Energy storage and electric vehicle makers are racing to secure LFP supply as governments worldwide push for cleaner energy and transportation.
Instead of building factories itself, Nano One is licensing its One-Pot™ process to development companies (DevCos) in different regions. Market Screener explains this approach lets the company establish local partnerships and tap regional markets without massive upfront investment. The strategy mirrors how tech firms license software — the licensee builds and operates the facility while Nano One gets ongoing royalties.
Outside China, demand for LFP cathode material will explode over the next decade. Barchart reports non-Chinese markets need 2.1 TWh of annual capacity by 2035 — roughly 10 times current levels in some regions. This supply gap creates opportunity for companies like Nano One that can help build local production. Western nations are also prioritizing battery independence from China for defence reasons.
While LFP dominates now, Nano One is monitoring sodium-ion batteries as a potential next wave. Market Screener notes the company is exploring how its supply chain expertise — including feedstock testing and recycling — could apply to newer chemistries. Sodium-ion batteries are cheaper and use more abundant materials, though they remain less mature than LFP technology.
