FDA Authorization Expands Philip Morris Zyn Portfolio in the US Market

Philip Morris International Inc. has received FDA authorization for 11 nicotine-pouch products, bolstering its position in the fastest-growing nicotine category in the US. The products, which include higher-strength Zyn Ultra pouches launched in June at prices below those of its flagship Zyn brand, could help the company reach more consumers and defend its market position. However, lower pricing and increased investment may create a trade-off between sales growth and profitability. This follows another important regulatory development in June, when the FDA allowed 20 variants of Philip Morris’s Zyn pouchers to be marketed as less harmful than cigarettes. However the company must prove that demand for the higher-strong products is strong enough to justify the additional investment behind the launch. The FDA decision does not guarantee that ZynUltra will achieve meaningful consumer adoption.
