A two-piece fireproof document bag is selling for just $11.89 on Amazon during Prime Day 2026 — and one shopper decided to put it to the test with an open flame. The result? The bag "only warmed" under direct fire, according to El Paso Times. But fire safety experts say that quick torch test tells only part of the story.
The bag is made of silicone-coated fiberglass and claims to resist temperatures up to 5,200°F. It comes with a large bag and a smaller pouch, plus a reflective strip to help you find it in the dark. The deal is live through June 26 as part of Amazon Prime Day, which spans more than 35 shopping categories.
What the Torch Test Actually Proved
An anonymous Amazon shopper held a butane torch to the bag for about 60 seconds. The outside did not char. The bag did not catch fire. Contents inside only got warm, according to Tennessean. For a quick, surface-level test, the bag held up.
But fire safety analysts at The Ledger warn that a handheld torch test is not the same as a real house fire. The average home fire burns at around 1,500°F for 30 to 60 minutes. Paper inside any container starts to char at just 451°F. So even if the bag itself survives, your documents might not.
"Fireproof" Is a Marketing Word, Not a Safety Rating
Most of these bags carry a UL 94 certification. That sounds official, but it is a flammability standard for plastics — not a guarantee your documents survive a house fire. A real fire-rated safe needs a UL 72 or Class 350 rating, according to Courier Journal. The $12 bag does not meet that bar.
The zippers and stitching are the weakest points. Even if the fiberglass shell holds up, those seams can fail at much lower temperatures. The reflective strip — marketed as a safety feature for low-light emergencies — can melt within 30 seconds of direct fire exposure, according to Savannah Now.
Survivalists Say Use It as a Layer, Not a Safe
Survivalist communities do not dismiss the bag entirely. Instead, they recommend placing it inside a fireproof safe. The bag adds a buffer against heat that can seep through metal during a prolonged fire. At $11.89, it costs far less than a standalone safe, according to Herald Tribune.
The bag's water resistance is seen as a genuine plus. Floods, burst pipes, and firefighting hoses destroy documents too. For everyday protection against water damage, experts say the bag earns its price. The concern is when buyers treat it as full fire protection and skip a rated safe altogether.
