Season 3 Premiere Delivered a 25-Minute Battle — and Controversy

Episode 1 opened with the Battle of the Gullet — a massive naval fight that took up 25 full minutes of screen time. The sequence was adapted from just four pages of text in George R.R. Martin's book, according to Forbes. Showrunner Ryan Condal called it one of the "craziest episodes of TV ever made."

The premiere drew praise for its visuals but criticism for changes to the source material. Key among them: Princess Rhaena Targaryen tames the wild dragon Sheepstealer, a role given to a different character in the books. Critics warn these changes could have "major ripple effects" for the show's final season, according to Variety.

What to Expect in Tonight's Episode 2

Tonight's 68-minute episode is expected to show Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen reeling from the death of her son, Prince Jacaerys, who was killed in the Season 3 premiere. Emma D'Arcy plays Rhaenyra as "shattered" by that loss, according to USA Today. Analysts expect her to abandon any hope of a peaceful deal with the Green faction led by Alicent Hightower.

On the Green side, King Aegon II has fled King's Landing to escape his brother Prince Aemond, who now rules as Prince Regent. Matt Smith's Daemon Targaryen is also expected to take on a bigger role this season. Showrunner Ryan Condal said Daemon "should have much more to do this season" now that full-scale war has begun, according to News-Leader.
