Chiltern Vital Group, Cambridge Atomworks Partner on Nuclear Micro-Reactor R&D at Berkeley Green

Chiltern Vital Group (CVG) and Cambridge Atomworks (2024) Ltd have signed a Letter of Intent to develop the ODIN nuclear micro-reactor at the Berkeley Green Science and Technology Park in Gloucestershire. The deal marks a major step forward in the regulatory path for the ODIN reactor — a small, lead-cooled design aimed at powering hard-to-decarbonize industries, according to The Province.
CVG's subsidiary, Chiltern Vital Berkeley (CVB), now owns and is developing the 40-50 acre former nuclear site. The company is in final negotiations with several other nuclear and energy firms looking to locate there, signaling Berkeley's potential as a major UK nuclear cluster, UK ADVFN reports.
The ODIN is a nuclear micro-reactor cooled by molten lead rather than water. Lead-cooling lets the reactor run at higher temperatures, making it useful for industrial heat as well as electricity. It also has stronger passive safety features — meaning it can shut itself down without human action in an emergency, according to Financial Content.
Micro-reactors like ODIN typically produce between 5 and 20 megawatts of electricity — far smaller than a traditional plant. The UK government's Civil Nuclear Roadmap to 2050 targets 24GW of nuclear power and specifically highlights a gap in micro-reactor technology for industrial use. The ODIN is a direct answer to that gap, Calgary Sun reports.
Berkeley was home to one of the UK's first commercial nuclear power stations before it stopped generating in 1989. That history matters. By choosing Berkeley, Cambridge Atomworks gains access to a site already familiar to nuclear regulators — avoiding many of the planning hurdles that come with building on a brand-new location, according to County Market.
South Gloucestershire and Stroud College (SGS) sold the site to CVG after signing an exclusivity deal in March 2024. CVB completed the acquisition in early June 2024 and has since finalized a master plan for the park. The Western Gateway economic partnership has also named the Berkeley and Oldbury sites as the "Severn Edge" anchor of its £1.6 billion "Nuclear Arc" strategy, The Observer reports.
The Letter of Intent focuses on testing the "combined physics and thermal hydraulics" of the ODIN reactor. In plain terms, this means proving the reactor can safely move heat around during operation. That data is critical for getting approval from the UK's Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR), which runs a rigorous process called the Generic Design Assessment before any new reactor can be built, Cochrane Times Post reports.
CVG Chief Executive Chris Turner said the partnership is "a significant step forward" and that Cambridge Atomworks' plan to use the prototype as a training facility "aligns perfectly" with CVG's vision for Berkeley. Cambridge intends the reactor to train nuclear workers for both the UK and global markets, according to Mitchell Advocate.
Supporters say locking in Cambridge Atomworks makes Berkeley more attractive to other firms — including large players scouting the Severn Edge region. The broader Nuclear Arc project is projected to bring £1.6 billion into the regional economy by 2030 and create thousands of high-skilled jobs, Recorder reports.
Not everyone is cheering without reservation. Some local environmental groups have called for transparency on how spent fuel from the prototype reactor will be stored. Local residents have also raised questions about the "experimental" nature of lead-cooled reactors compared to the water-cooled designs that powered Berkeley for decades, Pembroke Observer reports.
