Lidl GB Rolls Out Self-Scanning Technology to 37 More Stores After Positive Trial

Lidl GB is rolling out its self-scanning technology, called "Lidl & Go," to 37 more UK stores as of July 2, 2026, following a successful seven-store pilot Essex Live. The feature lives inside the Lidl Plus app, letting shoppers scan items as they walk the aisles, track spending in real time, and pay at checkout without unloading a full trolley onto a conveyor belt.
Chief Customer Officer Louise Weise said customers value "the control and visibility it gives them over their spend," and promised Lidl would "continue to take on board feedback" Nottingham Post. Staffed tills will stay open alongside the new tech.
Lidl & Go is built directly into the existing Lidl Plus app — no separate device, no store-provided scanner. Shoppers open the app, scan barcodes as they pick up products, and watch a running total update live. At checkout, they generate a QR code and pay. That's it Kent Live.
The device-free design is a deliberate cost move. Rivals like Tesco provide handheld scanners in stores, which are expensive to buy and maintain. By using customers' own smartphones, Lidl keeps hardware costs near zero. The Lidl Plus app has more than 125 million downloads globally, giving the company a ready-made platform Plymouth Herald.
Lidl did not rush this. A small "friends and family" trial ran across three stores in late 2025 to stress-test the app. That grew into a seven-store public pilot in May 2026, covering Airdrie, Cardiff, Epsom, Glenrothes, Kingston, Guildford, and Eastleigh Essex Live. The jump to 37 more stores follows just weeks later.
This is not Lidl's first attempt at self-scanning. A 2022 trial across ten stores in Belgium was shut down after high levels of shrinkage — the retail term for theft — proved the system unworkable without a loyalty app to track users Kent Live. The key difference in 2026 is that every "Lidl & Go" user must be logged into the app, creating a digital record of each shop.
The tech rollout sits inside a much bigger push. Lidl GB is spending £600 million on UK infrastructure this year, opening 50 new stores and building a new warehouse in Leeds Nottingham Post. That programme is expected to create 2,000 new jobs. Lidl also boosted spending on personalised app coupons by 60% this year, weaving discounts tightly into the "Lidl & Go" experience.
The Lidl Plus app itself is expanding fast. On July 1, 2026 — one day before the UK rollout announcement — Lidl Plus launched in the United States, its 32nd global market Plymouth Herald. The UK's "Lidl & Go" system runs on the same technical framework, meaning lessons learned in Britain can feed directly into future global rollouts.
Customer reaction is mixed. Shoppers with young children have praised the app for cutting checkout stress. But some users have pushed back on a separate change: a new "Lidl Plus Points" reward system launched in May 2026. Critics online called the update a "downgrade," arguing the 1% effective discount is worse than what came before Kent Live.
There are also questions about who gets left behind. Lidl insists staffed tills will remain open. But analysts warn that as self-scanning matures, the number of staffed lanes could shrink, cutting off elderly shoppers or those without smartphones Essex Live. For now, Lidl's message is simple: "Lidl & Go" is one option, not a replacement.
