Korean SDT Inc. Partners with Open Quantum Design to Advance Accessible Quantum Computing

Korean quantum design-and-manufacturing company SDT Inc. has joined Open Quantum Design (OQD) as a formal member, linking two national quantum ecosystems across Canada and South Korea. Newswire reported that OQD is a Canadian non-profit building what it calls the world's first fully open-source, full-stack trapped-ion quantum computer.
In a parallel deal, SDT will also join the Preferred Vendor Program of LightFlow, OQD's cloud-based CAD-to-machining platform for free-space optical systems. Both agreements were announced simultaneously, signaling a deeper manufacturing and software partnership between the two organizations. Financial Post described the move as linking "two sovereign quantum ecosystems through open, interoperable standards."
OQD is developing a trapped-ion quantum computer. Trapped-ion systems use individual charged atoms as quantum bits, or qubits — the basic units of quantum computing. The key difference with OQD's project is that all hardware and software is released under an Apache 2.0 open-source licence. That means anyone in the world can inspect, use, and build on the design for free.
Open-source quantum computing is rare. Most leading quantum systems — from IBM, Google, and others — keep their hardware designs proprietary. OQD's approach aims to lower the barrier to entry for researchers, governments, and companies worldwide. Ontario Farmer noted that the goal is to make quantum computing "accessible worldwide."
SDT Inc. is described as a leading Korean quantum design-and-manufacturing company, often called a QDM firm. That means SDT handles both the design and physical production of quantum hardware components. This makes it a practical partner for OQD, which needs real-world manufacturing capability to turn open-source blueprints into working machines.
By joining OQD as a member, SDT gains a seat in the organization's governance and collaboration network. The partnership is not just symbolic. SDT's entry into the LightFlow Preferred Vendor Program means the company will supply machined parts for free-space optical systems — a critical piece of trapped-ion hardware that directs laser beams at ions to control qubits. LightFlow is OQD's cloud-based platform that takes CAD designs — digital 3D models — and connects them directly to machining facilities. The goal is to remove manual steps between designing a quantum optical component and having it manufactured. This kind of direct design-to-manufacturing pipeline is unusual in quantum hardware. Most quantum companies manage these steps separately. By building it into an open platform, OQD hopes to speed up the production of quantum components globally and let other research groups use the same supply chain. The deal connects Canada's open-source quantum research community with South Korea's advanced manufacturing sector. South Korea has invested heavily in quantum technology as part of its national science strategy. SDT represents the commercial manufacturing side of that push.
