Graphic Designer Sues Deion Sanders Over Alleged PRIME21 Logo Licensing Dispute

Colorado football coach Deion Sanders is facing a lawsuit from graphic designer Alan Tipp, who created the iconic "PRIME21" logo in 2011. Sean Keeler reports that Tipp alleges Sanders and his management team, SMAC Entertainment, cut him out of promised merchandise revenue and branding opportunities after Sanders arrived at Colorado. The lawsuit seeks $75,000 in damages and adds another distraction as the Buffaloes prepare for their season opener.
Tipp signed a conditional agreement giving up rights to the PRIME21 logo. But he says Sanders promised him a key role in marketing and branding decisions. Idaho Statesman reports Tipp was supposed to collaborate with Nike on Sanders-branded apparel and footwear. He also expected to design and develop a line of Sanders-themed sunglasses using the logo. Those opportunities never materialized, Tipp claims.
The lawsuit targets not just Sanders but also his management company SMAC Entertainment. The News Tribune notes that Tipp is also seeking damages from Shilo Sanders, the coach's son. Shilo currently faces his own bankruptcy proceedings, adding complexity to collections efforts. The multiple defendants suggest Tipp believes the entire marketing operation benefited from his design work.
Sanders arrived at Colorado in 2023 as a high-profile coaching hire with massive expectations. The PRIME21 logo became central to his personal brand and merchandise strategy. Now, just as the football team prepares for kickoff, Sanders must deal with courtroom battles instead of focusing solely on the team. The timing couldn't be worse for a program trying to build momentum after a disappointing season.
