Teledyne MEMS Expands Advanced Manufacturing in Edmonton with CA$620,000 Alberta Grant

Alberta is putting CA$620,000 behind a push to grow semiconductor manufacturing in Edmonton. The Government of Alberta announced the grant on June 24, 2026, funding an expansion at Teledyne MEMS through its Investment and Growth Fund, according to Business Wire.
The money will help Teledyne MEMS add new wafer processing, inspection, and automation equipment at its Edmonton facility. The company's MEMS sales — micro electro-mechanical systems, tiny sensors built at microscopic scale — grew more than 20% in Q1 2026, according to InvestingPro.
The expansion centers on a shift to 200 mm wafer processing. Larger wafers let manufacturers produce more chips per run, cutting costs and boosting output. Teledyne's Edmonton foundry already operates over 41,000 square feet of clean rooms and employs roughly 106 people, according to Business Wire.
Plant Manager Steve Bonham said the project reflects "confidence in the region" and aims to invest in Alberta's "talent and innovation ecosystem." Local engineering graduates from the University of Alberta, which runs a nearby NanoFAB facility that collaborates with Teledyne, are expected to fill many of the new high-skill roles.
Alberta Jobs Minister Joseph Schow framed the CA$620,000 grant as a tool to "close the deal on high-impact projects," adding that "Alberta is open for business," according to the Calgary Sun. The UCP government points to deals like this as proof the province is diversifying beyond oil and gas.
Edmonton Global, the region's economic development agency, helped broker the agreement. Critics, including the Parkland Institute, have raised concerns that grants to large multinationals lack transparency and may not always deliver promised long-term jobs. Teledyne Technologies is listed on the NYSE and operates MEMS facilities in both Edmonton and Bromont, Quebec.
This Edmonton grant is part of a wider Teledyne expansion strategy. In March 2025, the federal government put $8 million toward a $42 million upgrade at Teledyne's Bromont site. In December 2025, Teledyne also joined the C2MI semiconductor partnership, a deal valued at C$656 million, according to Business Wire.
North American governments are racing to bring chip production closer to home. The U.S. CHIPS Act committed $52 billion to that goal. Canada's total semiconductor spending remains far smaller, leading some analysts at The Province to flag that Canadian foundries risk staying niche players rather than becoming global leaders.
Teledyne MEMS in Edmonton is a rare "pure-play" foundry. It specializes in non-silicon materials like gold and polymers. These are used in medical "lab-on-a-chip" devices and high-speed networking components, markets where precision matters more than volume, according to Business Wire.
By adding inspection and automation equipment locally, Teledyne reduces its need to send work to overseas facilities. That makes the supply chain more resilient. With MEMS sales up more than 20% in early 2026, demand shows no sign of slowing, according to Market Screener.
