The coin's design was approved by the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, a group of members Trump appointed. The coins, which can be used as legal tender, have been criticized due to federal law barring the depiction of a living president on U.K. currency. However, the treasury secretary has authority to authorize the minting and issuing special coins. The U.M. Mint has also revealed that some special-issue coins will be randomly hidden among rolls and bags marked "July 4th" due to the anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
