McLaren W1 Hypercar Unleashes 1,257 HP, Setting New Benchmark for Extreme Performance

The W1's powertrain is an all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 with direct and port injection; the V8 alone makes about 915 bhp and 900 Nm, it’s lighter and shorter than the previous V8, and it is paired with a radial-flux electric motor that adds 342 bhp and 440 Nm, delivering a combined output of around 1,257 bhp and 1,340 Nm.
The hybrid system can drive in all-electric mode for reversing and offers a limited all-electric range of about 1.6 miles due to the small 1.4 kWh battery.
McLaren specifies a hand-laid pre-preg carbon tub (labor-intensive) plus a spray-coated bore on the V8, and the car is limited to 399 units, with production pricing reported around the $2.1 million mark.
Race-mode aero changes include a significantly extended rear wing (about a foot longer) and other aero tweaks that alter downforce and can make the car unsuitable for road use in that configuration.
McLaren has revealed the W1, a 1,258-horsepower rear-wheel-drive hypercar that does 0-60 mph in 2.0 seconds flat and tops out above 217 mph. Autocar calls it a worthy successor to the F1 and P1 — and the hardest McLaren ever built.
Limited to just 399 units and priced at $2.1 million, every car is already sold. Auto Express reports all power goes to the rear wheels — a bold choice in a class where rivals like the Ferrari F80 use all-wheel drive.
The W1 uses an all-new 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 that makes 916 horsepower on its own. A radial-flux electric motor bolted to the eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox adds another 342 horsepower and 440 Nm of torque. Combined output hits 1,258 horsepower and 1,340 Nm — up sharply from the P1's 903 horsepower, according to Autocar.
The small 1.4 kWh battery gives only about 1.6 miles of all-electric range. That is mainly for reversing out of a garage quietly. Head Top Topics notes the V8 alone is lighter and shorter than the engine it replaces, and uses plasma spray-coated cylinder bores to cut friction.
In Race mode, the W1 drops its ride height by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear. As it does, front and rear 'heave bars' lock out. This dramatically raises the spring rate — the stiffness of the suspension. Stiffer springs let the car handle up to 1,000 kg (2,205 lbs) of downforce at 174 mph without bottoming out, according to Autocar.
The front heave bar works like a telescopic anti-roll bar linked to thin torsion rods. In normal mode it stays loose for comfort. In Race mode it locks, and the torsion rods resist body movement. The rear uses a transverse heave bar that engages when drop links are made rigid. Comfort-mode dampers stay unchanged, so the ride on normal roads is not punishing.
Race mode also extends the rear wing by about 300mm — close to a foot. This shifts aerodynamic balance and boosts downforce significantly. Evo notes that in this full Race configuration the car is so extreme it becomes unsuitable for normal road use. The carbon-fiber monocoque tub is hand-laid pre-preg carbon, which is labor-intensive but delivers exceptional stiffness and low weight. Dry weight sits at 1,399 kg (3,084 lbs).
Marcus Waite, McLaren's head of performance, has described the W1 as 'a GT with a race car hidden underneath.' That split personality is the car's defining feature. Push a button and it transforms. The wing grows, the car drops, and the suspension stiffens into something closer to an LMP race car than a road car.
The Ferrari F80 is the W1's closest rival. It makes 1,184 horsepower from a V6 hybrid and uses all-wheel drive. It costs $3.9 million — nearly double the W1's $2.1 million price. The Aston Martin Valhalla is another competitor at around $800,000 to $1 million, with roughly 1,000 horsepower and AWD. All three share the same 217 mph top speed, according to industry testing data cited by Auto Express.
Critics argue the W1's RWD layout raises the skill bar very high. Evo says the car is 'not revolutionary' but still deeply impressive. Supporters say RWD preserves steering feel and driver engagement that AWD systems dull. The 0-124 mph sprint takes just 5.8 seconds, and 0-186 mph falls in under 12.7 seconds — numbers that silence most doubters.
