Pacific Storms Bring Flood Risks and Extreme Heat Across the Southwest

A Pacific storm drawing tropical moisture from Odalys and Polo is bringing rain and thunderstorms to Arizona, with the heaviest rain expected from late Monday through Tuesday morning. Flood Watches cover parts of the Phoenix area, northern Arizona and southeastern Arizona; the Valley could receive 0.25 to 1 inch of rain, with higher totals in the High Country and possible effects on Tuesday’s commute. Southern and eastern Utah face a heightened risk of heavy rain Monday and Tuesday, with some areas possibly receiving more than an inch. The Rio Grande Valley is expected to remain dangerously hot until a separate unsettled system brings a chance of several inches of rain and isolated flash flooding beginning Thursday and continuing into the weekend.
Before the rain arrives, heat indexes in the Rio Grande Valley are forecast to reach as high as 115 degrees.
Rainfall odds vary across deep South Texas: coastal Cameron and parts of Willacy counties have a 35% chance of receiving up to 2 inches, while Brooks, Jim Hogg, Starr and Zapata counties have a 62% to 71% chance of more than 2 inches. Those inland counties also have a 10% chance of receiving as much as 6 inches.
Driving through floodwater can cause thousands of dollars in engine damage, according to a Fox 10 Phoenix report.
