National Hurricane Center Tracks Three Systems With Potential for Tropical Development

The National Hurricane Center is tracking three tropical systems that could develop into storms in the coming weeks. One system—a tropical wave moving off Africa early next week—has a 30% chance to develop within seven days, Herald Sun reported. The other two systems pose no threat to Florida and have low development odds. So far, the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season has been unusually quiet with only three named systems.
The most closely watched system is a tropical wave expected to emerge from the African continent early next week. Macon.com noted the National Hurricane Center gave this system a 30% chance of becoming a tropical depression or storm within the next seven days. A 30% chance means it's possible but far from certain.
Tropical waves form regularly off Africa during hurricane season. They travel westward across the Atlantic Ocean. Some weaken and disappear. Others gather strength and develop into named storms. Sacramento Bee indicated this particular wave will require close monitoring as it moves across the ocean.
Two additional systems are also being tracked by the National Hurricane Center. San Luis Obispo reported that both have very low chances of developing into organized storms. Neither system threatens Florida or the Gulf Coast. Their low development odds mean they are not considered serious concerns at this time.
Through this point in the season, only three tropical systems have earned names. This is well below the typical pace. Tri-City Herald noted that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration recently updated its seasonal forecast. NOAA now expects between seven and 13 named storms for the entire 2026 season.
Of those seven to 13 named storms, NOAA predicts two to six will strengthen into hurricanes. This represents a below-average year compared to historical data. The slow start to the season means forecasters are watching the coming weeks carefully to see if activity picks up.
