PNC Financial Services Adjusts Diverse iShares ETF Holdings Across Multiple Market Sectors

In the MBB position, PNC boosted its holdings by 106,144 shares in Q1 to a total of 3,106,470 shares, worth about $294.96 million, with institutional ownership in MBB reported at 91.70%.
Beyond PNC, other large institutions also increased their MBB stakes in recent quarters, including LPL Financial (+4.1%), TIAA Trust National Association (+2.5%), Morgan Stanley (+4.1%), Truist Financial Corp (+8.7%), and RenaissanceRe Holdings Ltd. (+34.9% in the prior quarter).
GOVT remains a meaningful slice of PNC’s portfolio and is its 19th-largest holding, with 54,704,163 shares valued at about $1.253 billion.
The iShares Core S&P Mid-Cap ETF (IJH) position is PNC’s 25th-largest holding, totaling 15,872,639 shares worth roughly $1.072 billion after a 1.7% increase.
iShares MSCI EAFE ETF (EFA) is down modestly in PNC’s Q1 activity, with PNC holding 8,399,549 shares (about $815.85 million), a 0.7% decrease, and institutional ownership in the fund reported at 79.80%.
PNC Financial Services Group boosted its stake in the iShares MBS ETF (MBB) by 106,144 shares in the first quarter, bringing its total to 3,106,470 shares worth about $294.96 million, according to Watchlist News. The move was part of a broader portfolio reshuffle that touched fixed income, international stocks, and U.S. equities.
Institutional investors own 91.70% of MBB, and PNC was not alone in adding to the fund. Several major players made similar moves in recent quarters, signaling continued appetite for mortgage-backed bond exposure.
PNC's biggest fixed income position is in the iShares U.S. Treasury Bond ETF (GOVT). The bank grew that stake by 3.3% in Q1, ending the quarter with 54,704,163 shares worth about $1.253 billion, according to Watchlist News. GOVT ranks as PNC's 19th-largest holding overall.
The MBB increase of 3.5% adds to that fixed income tilt. Together, the two bond ETF positions show PNC leaning more heavily on U.S. interest-rate-sensitive assets. MBB holds mortgage-backed securities — bonds tied to home loans — which tend to perform well when interest rates stabilize.
PNC was not the only large firm adding MBB shares. Watchlist News reported that LPL Financial raised its stake by 4.1%, Morgan Stanley added 4.1%, and Truist Financial Corp grew its position by 8.7%. TIAA Trust National Association added 2.5%.
RenaissanceRe Holdings went even further, expanding its MBB stake by 34.9% in the prior quarter. The broad trend across institutions points to a shared bet on mortgage-backed bonds as a stable income source amid uncertain markets.
Not every position grew. PNC cut its stake in the iShares MSCI EAFE ETF (EFA) by 0.7%, ending Q1 with 8,399,549 shares worth about $815.85 million, per Watchlist News. EFA tracks large international stocks in Europe, Australia, and Asia. Institutional investors own 79.80% of the fund.
PNC also trimmed its iShares S&P 500 Value ETF (IVE) position by 3.1%, leaving it with 2.27 million shares worth about $480 million. Value ETFs hold stocks seen as cheap relative to their earnings. The cuts suggest PNC is dialing back on some equity risk while adding to bonds.
On the equity side, PNC did add to one key position. It grew its iShares Core S&P Mid-Cap ETF (IJH) stake by 1.7% in Q1, reaching 15,872,639 shares worth roughly $1.072 billion, according to Watchlist News. IJH is now PNC's 25th-largest holding.
Mid-cap stocks — companies with market values between about $2 billion and $10 billion — are often seen as a middle ground between the stability of large caps and the growth potential of small caps. PNC's increase there, alongside its bond buying, paints a picture of cautious optimism heading into Q2.
