NBT Bank N A NY made sweeping moves in the ETF market during the first quarter, dramatically expanding positions across five major funds. The bank's biggest move was a 4,454.6% surge in its Vanguard Value ETF (VTV) stake, going from roughly 2,143 shares to 97,605 shares — a position now worth about $19.15 million, according to Watchlist News.
The buying spree stretched across large-cap U.S. stocks, international equities, and both short- and long-term bonds. Together, the moves signal a broad push to diversify NBT Bank's portfolio across multiple asset classes at once.
NBT Bank added 95,462 shares of VTV in Q1, making it the bank's 18th-largest holding at about 1.3% of its total portfolio. VTV tracks large-cap U.S. value stocks and opened at $219.17 on Friday, with a 52-week range of $174.35 to $222.15, according to Watchlist News.
The bank also started a brand-new position in Vanguard Extended Duration Treasury ETF (EDV), buying 191,595 shares worth about $12.44 million. That stake ranks as the bank's 29th-largest holding, equal to roughly 0.8% of its portfolio. EDV tracks long-dated U.S. Treasury bonds and opened at $63.49. It is a bet on falling long-term interest rates.
NBT Bank's position in the iShares Core U.S. Aggregate Bond ETF (AGG) exploded by 919.7% in Q1. The bank now holds 105,243 shares valued at about $10.45 million. AGG is a core bond fund that tracks a wide range of U.S. investment-grade debt, including government and corporate bonds.
The bank also raised its Vanguard Short-Term Corporate Bond ETF (VCSH) stake by 3,240.4%, now holding 113,606 shares, according to Watchlist News. VCSH focuses on short-term corporate bonds, which carry less interest-rate risk than long-term bonds. Together, AGG and VCSH give the bank broad fixed-income coverage across different maturities.
NBT Bank added 7,882 shares of iShares Core MSCI EAFE ETF (IEFA), growing that position by 9.1% to 94,077 shares worth about $8.52 million. IEFA tracks stocks in developed markets like Europe, Japan, and Australia. The move adds international diversification to what had been a largely domestic equity focus.
The bank also raised its stake in iShares MSCI Emerging Markets ETF (EEM) by 13.4% to 96,908 shares, and boosted its position in iShares iBoxx $ High Yield Corporate Bond ETF (HYG) by 26.2% to 67,230 shares, according to Ticker Report. High-yield bonds, also called junk bonds, pay more interest but carry higher risk of default.
Taken together, NBT Bank's Q1 moves point to a deliberate effort to spread risk across many corners of the market. The bank bought into U.S. value stocks, international developed markets, emerging markets, investment-grade bonds, short-term corporate debt, high-yield bonds, and ultra-long U.S. Treasuries — all in a single quarter.
This kind of broad, asset-class–balanced approach reduces the impact of any one market moving against the bank. By holding both short-duration bonds like VCSH and long-duration bonds like EDV, NBT Bank is hedging across the interest rate spectrum. The five core ETF positions alone now total over $59 million in value.
