Tupac Shakur's Family Reacts as Autopsy Photos Presented in Duane Davis Murder Trial

Some members of Tupac Shakur's family walked out of a Las Vegas courtroom before prosecutors displayed autopsy photos of the slain rapper, according to Dayton Daily News. Others chose to stay. The emotional moment came during the murder trial of Duane "Keffe D" Davis, who is accused of orchestrating the 1996 drive-by shooting that killed Shakur at age 25.
Davis faces a charge of murder with a deadly weapon. If convicted, he could spend the rest of his life in prison, Idaho State Journal reported.
Dr. Lisa Gavin, a forensic pathologist and medical examiner for Clark County, Nevada, took the stand and described exactly how Shakur was shot, according to Union Bulletin. Three bullets struck him during the September 1996 attack in Las Vegas. One bullet pierced his lung, causing it to collapse and fill with blood.
Doctors tried to save Shakur's life by removing the damaged lung, Journal-News reported. The effort failed. Shakur died six days after the shooting. He was 25 years old.
Prosecutors displayed the autopsy photos inside the courtroom during Dr. Gavin's testimony. However, the images were not shown on the public video feed of the trial, according to Kokomo Tribune. The move shielded viewers outside the courtroom from seeing the graphic material.
Some family members chose to leave before the photos appeared on screen. Others remained seated and faced what was shown, Joplin Globe reported. The courtroom moment underscored the painful and personal nature of the nearly three-decade-old case.
Davis, known by his street name "Keffe D," is accused of being the man who set up the drive-by shooting that killed Shakur on the Las Vegas Strip on September 7, 1996, according to MDJ Online. Authorities allege he was in the vehicle from which shots were fired at Shakur's BMW after a boxing match.
Davis is not accused of pulling the trigger himself. Instead, prosecutors say he planned and ordered the attack. The case took nearly 28 years to reach trial. Davis was arrested and charged in 2023, according to Corsicana Daily Sun.
Tupac Shakur was one of the best-selling rap artists in history. His 1996 killing sent shockwaves through the music world and remained one of the most high-profile unsolved murders in American pop culture for decades. The case drew intense public attention long before charges were finally filed, Daily Independent reported.
The trial is now giving Shakur's family and fans a chance to see the case play out in open court. The autopsy testimony marked one of the most difficult moments yet. The trial continues in Clark County District Court in Las Vegas, according to MDJ Online.
