Subway Canada Launches Footlong SubDog with Blue Jays Partnership and Sweepstakes

Subway Canada has declared the long-running "is a hotdog a sandwich?" debate officially over. The chain launched the SubDog on June 10, 2024 — a 12-inch, half-pound all-beef footlong hotdog served on its signature freshly baked bread. Calgary Sun reported the new item is available at participating Subway locations across Canada for a limited time.
The SubDog is made with Schneider's all-beef frankfurters and can be loaded with custom toppings. Subway is backing the launch with a national sweepstakes tied to the Toronto Blue Jays. The chain operates roughly 2,900 locations across Canada.
Subway Canada's Managing Director Courtney Hindorff said the chain is always looking for ways to shake up its menu. "The SubDog is a fun, delicious twist on a classic, and we're excited to bring it to our guests across the country," Hindorff said, according to Brantford Expositor. By serving the hotdog on a sub roll, Subway is planting its flag firmly in the "hotdog is a sandwich" camp.
The move is widely seen as "troll marketing" — using a years-old internet debate to get people talking. Marketing experts say Subway is selling a cultural stance, not just a meal. The brand is betting that picking a side sparks more buzz than staying neutral.
The SubDog uses Schneider's all-beef frankfurters. Schneider's is owned by Maple Leaf Foods, a major Canadian meat processor. Adam Grogan, President of Maple Leaf Foods, called it "a perfect match." He said "Schneiders and Subway are two iconic brands," according to The Whig. The deal is seen as a multi-million dollar boost for Canada's domestic meat industry.
The SubDog carries Subway's signature footlong format. Customers can pile on toppings like peppers, onions, and sauces — the same way they build any other sub. That sets it apart from a standard stadium hotdog. Analysts say Subway is trying to "premiumize" a food normally seen as a cheap, simple snack.
Subway Canada is running a national contest called the "Big Swing" Sweepstakes alongside the SubDog launch. The contest runs through September 15, 2024, with weekly prizes up for grabs. The grand prize is an all-expenses-paid weekend for four at a Toronto Blue Jays game, according to Edmonton Journal. The sweepstakes was built in collaboration with a creative agency called The Black Sea.
The Blue Jays tie-in is strategic. The overlap between Subway's core customers and Blue Jays fans skews heavily toward men aged 18 to 34. A multi-platform ad campaign is running on Sportsnet and social media. The sweepstakes opened on May 20, 2024, weeks before the product even hit shelves, according to Calgary Herald.
The SubDog is part of a bigger change at Subway Canada. In 2023, the chain overhauled its entire menu — moving from "build your own" toward chef-inspired items. The SubDog fits that comfort-food direction. It is a far cry from the brand's old "Eat Fresh" health image, according to Northern News.
Industry watchers say the move challenges Costco's grip on Canada's cheap hotdog market. If the SubDog catches on, rivals like Tim Hortons and A&W may feel pressure to add their own summer staples. For now, Subway is the only national fast-food chain selling a footlong hotdog on a sub roll — and calling it a sandwich.
