Clearlake Capital acquires Todd Boehly's stake to take full control of Chelsea football club.

Chelsea said the ownership group has invested substantially in the men’s and women’s senior teams, youth squads, Cobham training facilities, medical and player-support resources, academy pathways, and the club’s sporting and business leadership.
The 2022 sale of Chelsea from Roman Abramovich was mandated by the UK government, following sanctions imposed on the Russian oligarch.
Before the transaction, Clearlake held 61.5% of Chelsea, while Boehly, Walter and Wyss each held 12.8%; Clearlake is led by co-founders Behdad Eghbali and Jose E. Feliciano.
Boehly’s four-year tenure included a stint as Chelsea’s sporting director, in addition to his role as chairman.
Clearlake Capital has taken full control of Chelsea Football Club after buying out the remaining stakes from chairman Todd Boehly and director Mark Walter. Yahoo Sports UK reports the deal values Chelsea at roughly £5 billion when including debt. Boehly, who led the original consortium that purchased Chelsea from Roman Abramovich for £2.3 billion in 2022, is stepping down as chairman.
Boehly and Walter reportedly earned around £950 million for their combined 25% stake—a modest profit on their 2022 investment. Wisbech Standard notes that Boehly and Walter were among the American investors who partnered with Clearlake to acquire Chelsea following UK government sanctions on Abramovich. The club says operations, leadership, and strategy will remain unchanged under Clearlake's full ownership.
Clearlake Capital already held 61.5% of Chelsea before the latest deal. Yahoo Sports UK explains that Boehly, Walter, and Swiss billionaire Hansjörg Wyss each owned roughly 12.8%. Clearlake is led by co-founders Behdad Eghbali and Jose E. Feliciano. The firm moved to consolidate ownership after Boehly's four-year tenure, during which he served as both chairman and sporting director.
Todd Boehly steps down after helping steer Chelsea through a turbulent period. Wisbech Standard reports he served as chairman and sporting director during his tenure. His exit comes as Clearlake tightens its grip on major decisions—including potential upgrades to Stamford Bridge and the club's training facilities, which had created tension among the previous ownership group.
Chelsea confirmed there will be no immediate changes to day-to-day operations or strategy under full Clearlake control. MyMotherLode reports the ownership group has already invested heavily in the men's and women's senior teams, youth squads, and medical resources. Clearlake aims to continue the long-term sporting plan that was established following the 2022 takeover from Abramovich.
