Rockstar Makes GTA 5 PS5 and Xbox Series X|S Upgrades Free Amidst Upcoming GTA 6 Marketing Push

Rockstar said the PS5/Xbox Series upgrades add specific gameplay quality-of-life improvements, including “faster switching between the three protagonists” (a performance/flow upgrade noted by Engadget).
A Rockstar quote included in reporting specifies the timing and framing of the offer: “Beginning tomorrow, those who own any PS4 version or the digital Xbox One version of Grand Theft Auto V will be able to upgrade to the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S versions at no additional cost, and experience the best versions of GTAV and GTA Online ahead of the launch of The Kortz Center Heist.”
Reporting on the console upgrade lists concrete new GTA Online-related features on PS5/Xbox Series beyond general “technical improvements,” including Hao’s Special Works high-performance vehicles/upgrade content and Career Progress rewards.
Details on The Kortz Center Heist update in July include additional monetization/reward hooks: “record-breaking” discounts, “bonus GTA$ rewards,” and opportunities to claim rare/exclusive treasures via the “Fine Art Collector” program.
Rockstar Games is making the jump to current-gen free. Starting June 18, anyone who owns any PS4 version or the digital Xbox One version of Grand Theft Auto V can upgrade to the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S edition at no cost, Rockstar Newswire confirmed. The move reverses a paid upgrade policy from 2022, when those ports launched at $10–$20.
PC players also benefit. Worthplaying reports that owners of the "Legacy" PC edition can upgrade to the Enhanced version for free, gaining ray-traced lighting and other visual improvements. The timing is no accident — Take-Two has GTA 6 locked in for a November 19 release, and analysts see this as a clear warm-up act.
The PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions are not just visual touch-ups. Engadget highlights a specific quality-of-life fix: faster switching between the game's three main characters. Players also get access to Hao's Special Works, a high-performance vehicle upgrade system exclusive to current-gen hardware. Career Progress rewards carry over seamlessly from last-gen saves, including both Story Mode and GTA Online progress.
PC players upgrading to the Enhanced edition get ray-traced ambient occlusion and global illumination — lighting effects that dramatically change how the 13-year-old game looks. Rockstar framed the offer plainly: "experience the best versions of GTAV and GTA Online ahead of the launch of The Kortz Center Heist," Rockstar Newswire said.
Alongside the free upgrade news, Rockstar announced a major new GTA Online update dropping in July: The Kortz Center Heist. TheGamer reports the update introduces a new heist location and fresh loot. Rockstar is sweetening the deal with "record-breaking" discounts, bonus GTA$ rewards, and rare items available through a "Fine Art Collector" program.
There is also a monetization angle. Sportskeeda notes that GTA+ members get a $2,000,000 GTA$ discount on new Mansion and Art Studio requirements tied to the heist. Shark Card purchases currently carry a 40% bonus GTA$ incentive to help players prep. The heist functions as a major in-game currency event just as GTA 6 marketing kicks into high gear.
In 2022, Rockstar broke from tradition by charging players to upgrade a game they already owned. The backlash was real. Now, three years later, the company is reversing course. Engadget draws a parallel to 2021, when Rockstar shut down GTA Online on PS3 and Xbox 360. The theory: remove the financial barrier now, migrate the last-gen holdouts to PS5 and Xbox Series, then quietly end old-gen server support.
Players who paid for the upgrade between 2022 and now have reacted with frustration online, according to GamingBolt. The "patient gamer" crowd, however, is celebrating. Either way, the math is clear for Rockstar — GTA 6 launches exclusively on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The more players on those platforms now, the bigger the day-one audience later.
Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick confirmed the November 19 GTA 6 release date publicly on June 16, per TechRadar. He said the marketing ramp-up begins in late June. GTA V has now sold roughly 230 million copies lifetime, per Take-Two's own earnings report cited by IGN. The sequel carries an estimated $1.5 billion development and marketing budget — potentially the most expensive media project ever made.
Take-Two projects over $8 billion in revenue for fiscal year 2027, with an estimated 25 million day-one sales target for GTA 6. Industry insider NateTheHate told GamingBolt the game is on track "unless something unexpected and catastrophically goes wrong." The free GTAV upgrade, the July heist, and the marketing push are all pieces of the same machine — one built to make November 19 as big as possible.
