Mail-in Voting Freeze

Judge extends pause on postal rule limiting mail-in voting as constitutional battle continues.

U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani has extended a 60-day freeze on a rule limiting mail-in voting by the U.S.-Postmaster General David Steiner, stating that the rule infringes on states' constitutional power to administer elections and infringes Congress' power to legislate election policy. The administration and several state attorneys general have defended the rule as a "modest" mail regulation and not an election regulation. The judge's decision to extend the freeze on the policy is expected to be settled by the Supreme Court.
