Tata Motors Pivots to Chery EV Platform for Premium Avinya Models, Targeting 2027 Launch

Tata Motors is moving to revive its delayed premium electric vehicle plans by licensing an automaking platform from China’s Chery, according to multiple people familiar with the matter. Tata says it will use Chery’s Freelander platform—developed through a joint venture between Chery and Jaguar Land Rover—and will produce the vehicles at its newly opened plant in Tamil Nadu for its premium Avinya brand. The first Avinya model is now expected to launch in 2027, with at least one additional EV planned for 2029 and possible further models beyond that. The change marks a pivot away from Tata’s earlier plan to use JLR’s Electrified Modular Architecture for Avinya, which was derailed after JLR shelved plans to build EMA-based EVs in India. Sources indicate the first vehicle may be shipped from China as a kit for assembly in India while Tata works to localize components, aiming to regain lost time and reduce development costs. Tata describes Avinya as a global premium push and frames the Chery-JLR-derived platform as a way to accelerate technology and production after prior setbacks.
