UK Holidaymakers Can Save 26% on Flights Abroad This September and October

UK holidaymakers can cut their flight costs by 26% simply by travelling in September or October instead of July or August, according to research by KAYAK. The so-called 'shoulder season' offers a rare chance to avoid packed beaches and high prices at the same time.
National World reports that the savings apply across a wide range of destinations, from short-haul spots in Europe to longer-haul trips in Africa and Asia. For families freed from school-holiday dates, the timing could mean hundreds of pounds in savings.
KAYAK's data highlights ten destinations with the biggest price falls compared to peak summer. The list is led by short-haul options: Albania, Romania, Bulgaria, Sweden, Algeria, Norway, Poland, Tunisia, Barbados, and Ghana, according to The Scotsman.
Most of these are within a few hours' flying time from the UK. That makes them easy wins for travellers looking to stretch their budget. Shoulder season flights to these countries are not just cheaper — they are often less crowded too.
Island destinations see a big jump in interest once the school holidays end. Paphos in Cyprus leads the way, with a 129% rise in searches and prices down 14% compared to peak summer, according to Glasgow World.
That combination — more people looking and lower prices — points to a growing appetite for island getaways without the August rush. Paphos offers warm weather well into October, making it a practical as well as affordable choice.
Shoulder season savings are not limited to Europe. Seoul, South Korea, saw a 70% rise in searches paired with cheaper flights in September and October, according to Lancaster Guardian. Cape Town also recorded a significant jump in interest from UK travellers.
Both cities offer strong value outside peak summer. Seoul's autumn season brings mild weather and colourful foliage. Cape Town enters its spring in September, with temperatures climbing and far fewer tourists than in peak months.
The key message from KAYAK's research is simple: shift your trip by just a few weeks and save a quarter of your flight cost. The Lancashire Evening Post notes that September flights abroad average 26% less than the July-August peak.
Weather across most popular destinations remains warm and dry in September. School terms have restarted, so queues are shorter and hotels less full. For travellers with flexible dates, the shoulder season is one of the clearest travel hacks available right now.
