Anthropic Commits $350 Million to Study AI's Job Impact and Economic Transition

In an accompanying essay, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei wrote that in an automation-driven world “The key challenge in such a world won't be incentivizing growth, but finding a way for everyone to share in the benefits.”
Beyond labor-market policy, Anthropic also called for “robust oversight of advanced AI systems,” explicitly comparing regulation to “aviation safety frameworks.”
The $150 million fellowship is framed as a geographic equity effort—aiming to prevent AI-related benefits from concentrating in the “usual coastal tech corridors.”
Several reports contextualized the scale of the funding by noting Anthropic’s February 2026 Series G: a $30 billion raise that put its valuation at about $380 billion, with the $350 million package described as roughly 1.2% of that fundraising.
Anthropic announced a $350 million package on June 10 to study how AI will reshape jobs and the economy. The plan includes a $200 million Economic Futures Research Fund and a $150 million national fellowship program for early-career workers across the U.S. AP News reported that President Trump responded the same evening, saying he would meet with AI executives to ensure the public "becomes very rich" from AI gains.
The move comes just four months after Anthropic closed a $30 billion Series G funding round that put its valuation at $380 billion, according to Axios. At that scale, the $350 million package equals roughly 1.2% of the capital raised in that single round.
CEO Dario Amodei published an essay titled "Policy on the AI Exponential" alongside the announcement. He argued that AI is becoming "a general substitute for labor" — meaning it can do most jobs, not just narrow tasks. "The key challenge in such a world won't be incentivizing growth," he wrote, "but finding a way for everyone to share in the benefits," according to Riverbender.
Amodei called on governments to prepare for unemployment tiers at 5%, 10%, and levels he described as "unprecedented." His proposed fixes include wage insurance, incentives for employers to keep workers on payroll, and universal basic income. Some economists told Yahoo Finance they worry the tax base could collapse before a UBI system ever gets off the ground.
The $200 million Economic Futures Research Fund will back empirical studies and policy trials — testing things like wage insurance in real communities before governments roll them out nationally. Anthropic says the fund builds on an Economic Futures program it launched in early 2025, according to Crypto Briefing.
On the regulatory side, Amodei compared AI oversight to aviation safety. He argued that frontier AI models above a certain computing power threshold should require mandatory third-party audits before release — just as a plane cannot fly without safety certification. VentureBeat noted that analysts see this as the most aggressive regulatory proposal in the industry, one that could raise costs for smaller rivals who cannot afford the audits.
The $150 million fellowship program is designed to put early-career professionals in communities outside what Anthropic calls "the usual coastal tech corridors." The goal is to help workers in underrepresented regions learn to use AI tools locally, keeping economic gains from piling up only in San Francisco and Seattle, according to Whales Book.
Critics see a conflict of interest. Previous Anthropic safety fellowships saw 40% of participants eventually join the company full-time, according to Value The Markets. Some observers say the program doubles as a subsidized talent pipeline, letting Anthropic identify and lock in top early-career talent before competitors can recruit them.
Anthropic is not alone in this conversation. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman outlined goals for "widely shared" AI gains just two days earlier, on June 8. But Yahoo Finance noted that analysts view Anthropic's $350 million cash commitment as a more concrete "first move" than Altman's statements. Senator Bernie Sanders has separately pushed for a public wealth fund that would give the government an ownership stake in AI companies.
Skeptics frame the announcement differently. They point out that $350 million is a small fraction of $30 billion raised in one round. Some analysts told Trading View that the package could be a calculated move to head off windfall taxes or antitrust action — offering a voluntary contribution before regulators demand a much larger one. Anthropic says its first pilot programs under the fund will launch "soon."
