Ensign Energy Services Acquires Citadel Drilling for $65 Million, Expanding Fleet and Market Share

Ensign Energy Services Inc. is acquiring Citadel Drilling Ltd. for US$65 million, the company announced. The deal gives Ensign a larger fleet of high-spec AC drilling rigs and a stronger foothold in the Permian Basin, one of North America's busiest oil-producing regions, according to Newswire.
Ensign will fund the purchase using cash on hand and available credit lines. The deal is subject to certain closing conditions, Yahoo Finance reported.
The acquisition boosts Ensign's Permian Basin drilling capacity by 20%, according to Newswire. The Permian Basin, located in West Texas and New Mexico, is one of the most active oil-drilling regions in the world. A bigger presence there means more revenue potential and stronger ties with major energy producers.
Robert Geddes, Ensign's President and Chief Operating Officer, said the deal "broadens Ensign's client base, increases our Permian capacity by 20% and increases our market share in this region." He added that Citadel's customers will now have access to more rig capacity and advanced drilling technology, Yahoo Finance reported.
Citadel Drilling Ltd. brings a fleet of high-spec AC drilling rigs to the table. AC rigs — short for alternating current rigs — are modern, efficient machines that offer more precise control than older equipment. They are in high demand among oil producers looking to drill faster and more accurately, according to Market Screener.
Beyond the rigs themselves, Ensign gains a broader suite of oilfield services through the deal. That means Ensign can offer customers more options in one place — from drilling to other support services — making it a more competitive one-stop provider, ADVFN noted.
Ensign is acquiring all of the issued and outstanding shares of Citadel Drilling Ltd. The total consideration is US$65 million. The company will use existing cash and available credit facilities to cover the cost, according to Yahoo Finance Canada.
The deal is still subject to closing conditions, meaning final approval has not yet been granted. Ensign has not disclosed a specific closing date. Once complete, the acquisition will be folded into Ensign's existing US operations, Newswire reported.
Ensign Energy Services is already a major player in oilfield services. The company operates in Canada, the United States, and internationally. It runs drilling rigs and provides related services to oil and gas producers across multiple continents, according to ADVFN.
The Citadel deal fits a pattern of growth through acquisition. By buying an established operator rather than building new rigs from scratch, Ensign gets immediate capacity and an existing customer base. That makes the US$65 million price tag a faster path to growth than organic expansion alone, Market Screener reported.
