Chargers Wide Receiver Ladd McConkey is Day-to-Day With a Rib Injury

McConkey was injured on a third-and-16 play over the middle while the Chargers trailed Arizona by two points, absorbing what was described as a brutal hit.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport said McConkey was scheduled for tests Monday to determine “how long he is going to be out, if at all,” calling his potential absence “a loss for the Los Angeles Chargers.”
Yahoo Sports fantasy analysts said the Chargers’ offense was effective while McConkey played but “fell apart” after he exited, describing him as the piece that makes the unit function and raising concerns about the team’s receiver depth.
The Chargers will host Las Vegas in Week 2, while the Raiders are seeking their first 2-0 start since 2021.
Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Ladd McConkey is day-to-day with a rib injury after absorbing a hard hit over the middle during Sunday's 26-14 loss to Arizona. ESPN reported McConkey was struck by Cardinals linebacker Mack Wilson Sr. on a third-and-16 play late in the third quarter and did not return. He left the game after catching five passes for 82 yards and a touchdown—leading the Chargers in receiving—but experienced pain in his chest, back, hip and ribs.
Coach Jim Harbaugh said the team will monitor McConkey throughout the week, with his availability for Sunday's matchup against Las Vegas hinging on medical tests and practice participation. NFL Network analyst Ian Rapoport said McConkey was scheduled for testing Monday to determine "how long he is going to be out, if at all," calling his potential absence "a loss for the Los Angeles Chargers."
McConkey took a hard hit from Cardinals linebacker Mack Wilson Sr. while running a route over the middle on third-and-16, according to ABC 30. The play occurred when the Chargers trailed Arizona by two points. McConkey initially was listed with a chest injury but soon reported additional pain involving his back, hip and ribs.
The injury forced McConkey to leave the game in the third quarter and sit out the remainder of the contest. His early exit left a void on offense—McConkey had been the Chargers' most productive receiver to that point, accumulating five catches on seven targets.
Yahoo Sports analysts noted that the Chargers' offense was effective while McConkey played but "fell apart" after he exited the game. They described him as the central piece that makes the unit function. His five catches for 82 yards and a touchdown comprised a significant share of Los Angeles's passing attack early on.
McConkey's departure raised concerns about the Chargers' receiver depth heading into Week 2. Potential replacements like Tre' Harris and Quentin Johnston could see larger roles if McConkey cannot play against Las Vegas. The injury exposed how dependent the offense had become on a single core contributor.
Freedom 96.9 reported that McConkey underwent testing Monday to determine the full extent of his rib injury. His availability for the Las Vegas game will depend largely on how the injury responds during the week and his practice participation from Wednesday through Friday.
Yahoo Sports reported that the Chargers may have avoided a significant long-term injury, with McConkey's day-to-day status suggesting a relatively positive outlook. The team will make a final decision on his status after assessing his condition and test results during the week leading up to Sunday's matchup against the Raiders, who are seeking their first 2-0 start since 2021.
